What did you do in the garden today?

Didn't do a lot today. DS first day of 1st grade. When he finished dinner he wanted to go plant seeds. But it was late so we transplanted two of his carving pumpkin plants that we started a few weeks ago. Hopefully they have enough time to make pumpkins, and actually make female flowers. There are literally no carving pumpkins on any that I planted from spring though summer.

I saw a rat eating fallen apples and set a trap by the chicken shed. Little demon ran under the shed. The dogs got one a while ago. This one is slightly smaller than that one. I don't know where they came from. Didn't have rats around until this year.

Seedlings are doing well enough.
Lettuces are happy.

Cabbages are happy, thinned them this morning. I regret those cucumbers in the middle there already. 😂

What variety? I have a yellow colony and an orange one.

And where from?
From Superior shrimp Duluth MN. I chose culls for a lower cost start. Just like chickens culls from a top breeder are often better than from a average keeper. Assortment of colors. About half are black or nearly black. There are reds, blue and yellow.

It's a good thing I like the smell of tomatoes. :gigI will have tomatoes on my table in various stages of ripening for quite a while yet.

Remember cucamelons, those little cucumber-y things that look like an inch long watermelon?

Hubby doesn't care for them, so they're all mine. I have 3 plants, and that is plenty for me. I might pickle some. Hubby might like them that way. In which case, I'd plant 6 plants next year.

Good morning gardeners. The weather people just announced this morning that we’ll be getting rain this afternoon. Yikes! I thought I had until Sunday to prime and paint the boards I just put up the other day on the coop expansion. I found a half can of primer and a big paint brush and slapped a coat of primer on the wood. That should be dry before this rain. I have to take my wild child Chloe to the vet for her annual check up in 2 hours. I had planned on doing a little gardening this morning. Perhaps later.

We just had a shower come thru, seems to be some more coming a bit later on.

I had some blackberry jelly a while back that didn't set. I was going to use it in some homemade ice cream but couldn't find it in the pantry so either I or someone else just threw it out... 🙄 Anyway, point being that I'd really like a jar of syrup to use with some homemade ice cream or even make a sorbet with it.
That's a great idea, thanks! LOL. I got a Ninja Creami a few weeks ago & am always looking for ideas for my strawberries & rhubarb, it would make a great sauce.

We've caught 3 rats this summer (maybe 4?)! I've never seen a rat in my life till this summer.

So I got 2 greenstalks re-planted. My strawberries weren't doing fantastic so I had the soil tested & it's loaded with salt! @WthrLady didn't you have cococoir loaded with salt? I'm wondering if I did too. So anyway, I mixed up new potting soil & transplanted all my strawberries. Dang that was a lot of work, took me 5.5 hrs! But glad it's done & hope the strawberries recover.
Mine & then normal. Sheesh.

We have rain coming overnight/tomorrow.

Today I dug up the rest of the onions and one row of potatoes. I marked the rest of the rows, because the vines are dying and once they're on the ground and crispy dry, they disappear into the leaves/weeds and I can't find the places to dig.

Thus some of the volunteers I had this year, and probably will have next year. :gig
