What did you do in the garden today?

I caught the rat yesterday! Reset the trap. Nothing this morning.

So I got my seeds out and looked at what seed company I planted seeds from, for which varieties. I will not buy seeds from 'Valley Greene" again. Page Seed Company is who does this brand.

Not a single seed I planted from them germinated. Not one. And these are seeds from this year.

All of the seeds I got from them were heirloom varieties. I plant a lot of seeds at a time and this isn't a user error thing. I didn't cook them outside on accident, let them get too wet, or too dry, etc. no mold, no fungus. Just poor seed quality.

I may have gotten pumpkin seeds of theirs to grow, and cukes now that I think about it, but those varieties are pretty bulletproof. The ones I know didn't grow, broccoli, all the lettuce varieties, and radishes.

I finally got the bed for the Brussel sprouts tilled, cleaned and put down a big bucket of old chicken run compost. I picked a nice little bunch of chocolate cherry tomatoes and some grape tomatoes this morning. I suspect my San Marzano tomatoes may be a determinate variety. I have several ripening now and very few blooms. I’m not sure if it’s the cooler temperatures or they’re done. Not all the plants thank goodness. I’ll plant the Brussels sprouts and carrots in there tomorrow.

Did a 12 mile bike around the lake while the morning laundry was going and then came home and spent an hour tying up tomato plants. They're acting more like mid July now that the heat is sticking around for the night.
I tossed a dozen tomatoes to the hens as I just couldn't be bothered with them today.
I had a long discussion with the baby bunny hopping around in the horseradish about how dangerous it was to be in the garden.
He seemed to be listening intently as he slurped down a grape leaf.
:eye roll:
I tossed some Concord grapes to the hens too. Some are turning into lushes between the overripe apple drops and grapes.
Tipsy eggs are a thing, right?
The whole rest of the hot day was spent installing security cameras.
I got sick of looking at them spread out all over my front room
So there's that done.
I still need to spray weeds and cut down the wisteria, again. This stuff will NOT die.

I thought my tomatoes were done but found 5 baseball sized ones this morning so we had BLTs for dinner... 🤤

I also picked a couple of sweet red peppers, ate a handful of small everbearing strawberries, and gave the garden a little drink.

Saw a huge rat inside the hoop house. 😳 I knew it was in there somewhere since there's been evidence of poop along the wall studs. 🙄

Yesterday pulled baby cukes off . I'm so afraid of missing one and having it turn yellow and ending that plant that I'm on a quest to get them early. I pick a good handful then go out again and sure enough I see another few from another angle! I watered everything so it rained last night but very little. I'll need to do pickles again soon. Might try a less salty version on the brine.
