What did you do in the garden today?

What will you do differently next year?

I didn't plant any winter squash this year, as last year's was so disappointing. And the year before that. And the year before that.

I used to get 80-90(!!) butternut squash in my squash patch.
Wow, that is strange to have such success then much less. I’m trying a new hybrid variety. It has produced pretty well, although smaller to mid sized squashes.

I misted the lettuce/carrots/spinach seeds. Pulled a squash plant that got beat up in a storm a while ago. Trimmed up all the tomatoes. Hacked down the crazy marigolds. Picked more beans, cucumbers & tomatoes. I have 3 gallons of green beans in the freezer so far. I should vacuum seal them since I think I will have a ton this year.

I thinned out the kale/collards/bok choy/carrot seedlings and fed them to the chickens. I watered the seedlings after that.

I have two zucchinis that are getting bigger but they're not big enough yet. I need to let them grow for a few more days because I'm going to need lots of zucchini for the spicy relish I'm making later this week.

The yellow wax bean pods seem to be growing more slowly than the green and rattlesnake beans grew, probably because of the cool weather.

The heat is so oppressive today that even the giant oak trees are droopy. 🥵

Took the chickens some chilled watermelon. At first I couldn't see a single chicken. I have 65+ birds... You can usually see at least one running around somewhere. But it's so hot today that every last one of them was buried in the dirt somewhere deep in the shade. I think they were very thankful for the cold watermelon...

I checked cukes for those hidden buggars and found 2. Pulled cukes out of fridge and canned up jars of spicy spears, baby cukes , regular dills, even threw some cherry pepper(2) in a jar with banana peppers to see how that works. And made some sliced pickled jalapeños. I need to water tubs then all is watered and not droopy anymore. Had a nice rain last night. My squash production stinks here too average about 2 per plant! Will try to not plant any next year:he !I have amnesia every spring!!?? Give bugs a chance to move on!
FYI my sun gold cherry tomatoes are so tough skinned i will not do that kind again.

Had a storm move through. We have many oak trees around the house, and it sounded like rocks hitting the roof! The wind was tossing the trees, and they were dropping acorns non stop. Nothing big came down on anything that we could see. We'll walk through the woods tomorrow to see if there are any "volunteer" firewood trees.

Nutrina has a new super protein scratch. I bought it as it looks low in cheap corn filler.
It's boss millet some corn oats and berry flavored protein pellets. Smells delicious.
