What did you do in the garden today?

I picked more tomatoes, a small handful of black beans and another bunch of oregano to dry. I checked on the San Marzano volunteer on the slope, 3 tomatoes but still green. The yellow squash finally produced a few female blossoms but no male flowers anywhere. My few Concord grapes are nearly ripe and the pumpkin plant finally produced a female there’s still a few male flowers so if the female bud blossoms soon I might get a pumpkin. Fingers crossed. I didn’t have time to pick peaches or okra today but tomorrow I’ll have time. I need to water the garden again in the morning. It’s hot and humid here today and hopefully the last day to need the AC.

Early in the year, I fermented and preserved some long beans with salt. I am not sure, but I think I used about 1tbs of salt per cup of water which made it on the salty side.

This morning when I woke up, I got an idea to chop the preserved long beans into small pieces and cook it with my white rice. I also put a steamer tray on top of my rice cooker and layered the bottom with fresh shitake mushrooms and 4 salt marinated chicken legs. The steamer tray came with my rice cooker when I bought it.

I marinated the chicken legs for an hour in a mild salt brine to give it some flavor and mainly to take the blood out of the legs. I left the mushrooms whole and cut an X on top of them. Furthermore, I poked a hole on the fattest part of the drumstick with my knife and topped each drumstick with a slice of ginger.

I will use 1 to 2 tsp salt, finely minced ginger, green onion and will pour smoking hot peanut oil on top to make a sauce before serving.

More on my apple mystery...

I went ahead and picked one of the 2 remaining apples. The last one is too high to reach without a ladder.

The yellow-green apple is from my mystery tree.

The pink-red one is a Pink Lady I bought on Sunday at the store.

So... Clearly different. Wondering if my mystery tree is a Golden Delicious? 🤔 The apple I tasted this morning is sweet but not as sweet as a Pink Lady.

Maybe I'll try to leave the last apple on the tree until October and see if it turns pink?

Too green to be a golden. Maybe a Lodi .... Am trying to think of what the farm store sells, which isn't ever anything fancy. I was going to say Mutsu, which I have seen at the farm stores, but it's a later season apple.

Looks like my Golden Delicious apples. However, you are farther south, and they should be more yellow looking in your area by now I'd think. 🤔

Actually got beets, mustard, collard greens and cabbage seeds planted!!

We planted zinnias this year -we always like flowers in the garden. These are winners, we will plant again!! I have to walk past them all the time, lots of butterflies like them too. Next to the winter squash panels. The zinnias are now nearly as tall as me.

We have 4 squash panels the 2 middle ones are very vigorous squash, as you can see in the pic.
