Light rain expected all day... Need to go put out more carrot seed.

Read a good idea that I'm going to incorporate in my containers next year... Cut up sponges to put in the bottom below the soil... My flower pots get dried out too fast. Hopefully this will help!

I'm really sold on Hugelkultur, and your post made me consider putting wood scraps in the bottom of my potted plants. Wood absorbs moisture and releases it slowly, which one of the benefit of using wood in the bottom of a Hugelkultur bed.

That could be from skunks looking for grubs.

Could be squirrels. I have golf ball sized holes in my yard, but we don't have skunks here. We have squirrels, voles, moles, mice, snakes, opossums, and raccoons.

I worked on winterizing the pullets coop this morning. The only gardening I did was look at my Fall garden. I watered it yesterday morning. Then I took the hanging strawberry grow bags and put them on my front porch. The temperatures are back to more cool and seasonal. It was cold enough for frost this morning but it was too dry. Wah!

I remember in the book Charlotte's Web one of the goose eggs doesn't hatch, and Templeton the rat claims it for his own. Later on it explodes.

I'm planning on sowing the lettuce, Chinese cabbage + other greens. We got 10mm of rain yesterday, with more forecast.

I use wood in the bottoms of my larger raised beds... It's worked great so far. But I have a lot of small flower pots (10" - 12" diameter) for various flower seeds. Those dry out really easily in our hot summers. I've done various things with them for self watering but it's a pain to monitor & refill them. I do add stuff to the soil to help hold moisture but I feel like cut up sponges will do an even better job while also keeping things from becoming too compact.

Light rain off and on all day. I use soil moist crystals in my potting mix. They also sell it already in some potting mixes. I had coons on the game camera in the yard.
