Around here I have to dig up canna to over winter in the basement. I forgot one year and they died.

18* last night, brrr cold! In the fall I plant chard, kale, mustard, carrots, collards, romaine etc in 5 gallon pots right by my back door. Keep them under double row covers. Everything survived the dip in temperature except the romaine. Hopefully ill have fresh greens (and the chickens too!) through most of the winter. We hit negative temps and all bets are off though.

So sorry! I just googled it to see what greens needed to be avoided, and geez its everything I like to eat.except the okra. I hope your hubby has an easier time with that kind of restriction than I'm imagining. No pickles either! Oh the torture!
