What did you do in the garden today?

winter starts today. Shortest day of the year. We also have the vintage ceramic tree out. I used to peek at Christmas presents. We got about 1/2 inch of snow. Having trouble finding ingredients for a favorite holiday dessert. Local Kroger's did not have canned apricots or apricot Jello. Next trip to the big city I know I can find canned apricots. Apricot Jello not so sure.

I did the same thing yesterday! But, my kid is an older teen, knows where I “hide” the gifts before wrapping -which is in my walk-in closet. If I’m laying in bed, teen will sometimes walk in to see what I bought, and not wrapped. I’ll just tell her “not my fault if you have no surprises for Christmas, followed by “get out of my closet”. Teen just giggles, and yesterday (while laying in bed) I hear her in my closet say “awww, you bought me a baby goat calendar”. 🙄🙄🙄. So, what’s a parent to do? Well, I bought a useful storage item (which is kind of a boring gift -at least teen will think so) from Costco and it’s in a large box, and on the heavier side. I wrapped it up nicely a few weeks ago and now teen keeps saying “I really want to know what’s in the big present!” And probably has all kinds of grand ideas of what it is….but it’s not. 😈 🤣
Put most of the little presents inside, and tell her she has to open that one last.

Today I got a couple of small unpainted terra-cotta plant pots and made automatic waterers for my turmeric and my lemon tree. I keep forgetting to water them. Cut branches off my black pepper plants to start more jic. The first piece of the roof is fixed. 7 plum seeds have roots, waiting for leaves before I plant them.

In January the real planting starts.

Photos of the garden! Finally. Not great photos, but here's what I've got going on, aside from my carrots that aren't really doing much. They have real leaves. That's it. 😂

In the hoop house! I accidently used one of my tree covers so it's two times the size it should be.... But it's working, even in 50 mph winds. I can share my methods if anyone wants.

Inside the hoop is my lettuce and cabbage on the far side.

Next is my broccoli and cauliflower bed that is being wrecked by aphids. I'll deal with them when I spray my trees.

My garlic and peas. Every clove of garlic I planted is sprouting, some is still under the mulch, but I check it every week. Soooo much garlic!!!

I omitted my other beds, including the one with my 3rd year garlic bobules.

Today I pruned my grape vines. I only took before pictures. I need to take photos now that I finished.... I got distracted practicing with the sand wedge, a bucket of balls and a home Depot bucket. I. Stepped. In. So. Much. Dog. Poop.... 😫 My shoes are outside. It has been wet and my yard gets about 50% shade full time... So the poo is always wet. I need to make the lazy dog poop in the sun. 🙄

It's beautiful. One year I had somewhere around 7-8 trees. Artificial, ceramic, and crocheted.
right after my own heart! This year I only have 4 trees, but have on occasion put up 7. Can't stand the thought of being too old to put up Xmas decorations anymore, so I just start earlier. By the time I hit 80 years old, I'll be starting in june, loll

I want to try a couple of different tomato seeds from Hoss Tools in 2025. They both have the TYLCV resistance that I need and the Invincible is a determinate paste tomato that can set fruit in the heat, so I am looking forward to growing it.

Well I did another thing to poke at her a little bit. We went to a museum recently (Native American mounds and history in Ohio), and she really wanted these earrings -silver saber tooth lion skull. So, I bought them for her but told her they were a Christmas gift. She’s been looking for them under the tree since then, but not there. So, a couple of days ago I wrapped the box really nicely (it’s a small, but upright, not a flat jewelry box) and put it on top of the big present. She knows that small box has the sabertooth earrings, and still wondering what the big box contains. She’s dying to wear the earrings…. But has to wait a few more days.
