What did you do in the garden today?

Managed to get my butt out to the garden and winterize the water lines. Trying to decide the best way to cover my brassicas. They are inside the hoop house which is covered by insect netting but still susceptible to freezes... So I was thinking maybe I could just pull some clear visqueen directly over the plants themselves... They are about 4 ft tall and the row is about 10 - 12 ft? Think that would protect them well enough from a bad freeze?

Doing a little sewing project to make some bowl potholders. I haven't used my sewing machine in 5 years... 😂 Every time I pull it out I have to remember how to use it

Its wet, so very wet, not in a good way... a touch under 40deg December 31. Still deciding if I will have a garden this year as I will be taking a trip to see the in-laws overseas for three weeks ish.
When do you usually start your plants and what do you start them in? If it’s a seed tray could you just put a dome over them to keep them from drying out until you get back? I’ve used watering globes for things in pots with some success but I’m not usually gone for that long.

If none of that works, you could probably still squeeze in something quick-growing. Peas or something?

If that plastic is touching the plants they will freeze at all contact points. If the sun shines on that plastic it will burn the plants. Double row covers or old blankets are better, but still not touching plants. I use pvc pipe bent over veggie beds and throw the row covers over them. So far everything but the romaine has made it through the winter, but we've only dropped down to 18*. Still a long winter ahead of us.

I got my first seed catalog in the mail today! Gurney's.
Already planning for more tomatoes!
My bees in the 1 hive I have left a few weeks ago. :hit
I have not successfully overwintered bees yet. I think I have been trying for 5 years now. This year's hive was a swarm that a friend caught for me this year.
My husband gave me a generous gift card to a local farm & home style store. I plan to use it to buy more chicks ( to replace the 9 chickens that disappeared a few months ago). I currently have 5 hens and 3 roosters.

I'll pick up some lettuce and damaged plants to feed animals. washing and working on coops. I am not feeling well so yesterday I did washing only (4 loads). those 6 rainy days in a row were disaster. it is usually 1-2 days, 3 rainy days in a row happen once ot twice a year, in spring or/and early autumn.

happy new year!

I have some 2x2s staked in that area from vertical squash the year prior. They are approximately 6 ft out of the ground. If I drape anything over the plants, it would be have to be over those which would keep it off the top of the tall, bushy plants. It would probably still touch somewhere though as the plants are quite bushy. I don't have any row cover material... I do have a few frost protection bags to put over small trees but not sure I have enough.
