What did you do in the garden today?

The temp got up to 45 degrees today. I was going to go out and mulch some leaves to layer under some thick cardboard to try to kill some weeds in the garden ahead of spring but life had other plans. One of my very first hens came down sick... She will be 8 yrs old in March. I brought her inside to figure out what was wrong only to realize she had bad water belly. Her breathing was pretty labored and she refused to eat or drink. So I gave her a peaceful, warm afternoon inside and then took her to the vet who put her to sleep humanely. I did not want to put her through the trauma of draining her belly just to give her a few more months in cold, crappy weather. The vet confirmed the water belly and said otherwise she looks really good for her age. Poor girl. 😭
I’m sorry, that really does suck. You put her first and that’s commendable and at least she’s not feeling horrible now.

We’re in the 60’s and very low 70’s with nights around 40. Only a 30% chance of rain on Monday and Tuesday next week, but it has been over 100 days since we’ve had measurable rain 😬. Ordered some Jerusalem artichokes to grow again and then two new me items are Roselle and Egyptian spinach. So far the regular spinach and brassicas are doing fine and I dug out a few flower seeds and a couple herbs to add to the beds. I have a small tree to dig out and an even smaller tree to transplant this weekend.

@TJAnonymous, I'm sorry. Thank you for giving her an easy passing. She had a long, wonderful life with you.
:hugs :hugs :hugs

Fly high and free, lovely lady!
As soon as I got back in the truck to bring my poor girl home for burial, this song came on... It just felt so...poignant. 😢 I could only just sit there and listen with a sad heart. Some might think it's kinda dumb because she was just a chicken, but it still felt like saying goodbye to a friend.

still spring temperatures. I wish I had time for gardening. just picking some lettuce and weeding.

skrewed plywood on the pallet walls (inside, already have tin outside) in my goat pen and put straw on the new pallet floor. as I don't know when they mated I don't know when babies are due. finally finishing geese coop. predator proofing is the biggest thing to do.

Dreaming of a garden. Only 124 days till planting season ♥️
Ohhh yeahhh, Same!!! I finally have a green house erected since July so I am really excited to use it this season. I’m zone 6a so I think March I can put some stuff in there instead of the spare bedroom, lol. We’re almost through January!! yea! 💃❤️

I suppose the best part of winter is this little lady hanging out inside more! Shes a feral that adopted us last year and practices her hunting with her little stuffed animal. Awww we call her Weegee
