What did you do in the garden today?

Yesterday I started to clean out the chicken coop and fed my trees with the results. My baby peach trees (two years old) are absolutely thriving; far more new growth on them this year than the grafted trees.

The baby apricots are doing great but not as great as the peaches. The grafted almond is struggling, with barely an inch of new growth.

I want to try grafting a determinate tomato plant onto a super strong indeterminate tomato root stock, using my new cleft grafting machine. The plant supposed to retain the scion's disease resistance plus the resistance from the root stock and give the plant more vigor.
I want to hear how this goes! Please update. And I'd like to hear how your grafting machines does too.

This is how the cut looks like, to get a V wedge and V point, I slide the scion in one-way to cut a V point and turn the jig around and make another cut on the tree to get the V wedge. If it was vertical like a root stock it would stay in place while I wrap it with grafting tape, but if its sideways I need to hold it while I wrap it.

The blade is very sharp like a razor, as long as the scion circumference matches the tree's stem it will be a perfect fit. However, even if they don't match, I should be able to join them by aligning at least one side of the cambium. I'll post a picture when I get a successful graft.

Got ahead of the spring rush and picked up seed starting mix, new cells (72) as the ones we have are brittle and a 24" light, we are cutting back and don't need 2 48". DW got her seeds and I'm waiting for my hot pepper seeds. Going to start the peppers mid or third wk of March, DW will take care of the others when called for. Used to be in Zone 6b now 7a. About 1-2 wks difference. Apples and Oranges, hey?

Got the grapes fully cleaned up and pruned.

Got the asparagus cleaned up.

Got the in-ground garden bed cleaned up.

Even got my raspberries cleaned up. These beds are 3 - 4 years old. I've never pruned them so you can imagine they are pretty messy. I'm kind of concerned there's a fungal problem in the soil which is killing off my raspberries. Anyone dealt with that before?

I had a rust. Solution was to burn and plant new 600 ft away from these or wild. I don't have 600 ft away from wild, they are everywhere. Looked into fungicide , some said it makes berries taste like :sick. Others didn't mention the taste change

I know there is rust in my wild blackberries but I've never seen it in my red, gold, or pink (double gold) raspberries. The berries tasted fine and I didn't really see anything on the leaves that I recall. The only time I'm seeing the fungus is from pulling out the dead canes. The orange fungus is on the bottom of the canes only...the portion that is below ground. I thought raspberries were resistant to rust, except black ones which I don't have.

I guess I'll wait and see what happens in spring and if any new canes come up.

Nothing in the garden, but spotted bunbun. He's CHONKY. He's been eating spilled alfalfa pellets all winter.

We hit 33', so I washed the chicken's winter windows.
We'll be at 56 tomorrow, and looking at snow Friday. Such is the way.

I NEED to clean the shop, but we'll see how that goes Tuesday.

We're still doing battle with Anderson replacement windows.
They installed a new door for us last winter and we only had snow once, and it blew under the door and piled in the house. They replaced the seal with a larger one, but it never snowed again, until a couple weeks ago, and again we had snow, and OMG the cold it coming in.
So he'll be back Tuesday to figure that out. 6K and I want a door that doesn't let in a million crickets, snow and cold!!!
