What did you do in the garden today?

What variety and how long until they rot?
Stuttgarter from starts I know for certain although I always end up using starts and they don’t always list the variety. I attempted, again, to start Texas Grand and Spanish Yellow from seed last season but as stated earlier they sprout well ultimately stalling everytime when they are barely the size of thin grass, I then go to starts out of frustration. The onions appear to do well in the garden but usually start to show signs of rot shortly after harvest while they are being cured and it more often than not a layer rather then the whole onion that rots. We can usually salvage something from them although this is frustrating.

Do you rotate plant in a different area? Sounds like a fungal.

Every year we rotate everything keeping track of what was planted previously and how long ago in any given area every time the onions have the same results. I have looked at a fungus possibility as well and thought maybe a copper fungicide may be helpful. In fact, I think I did use this fungicide once in the past but results are always the same.

Fungus knats are terrible! 😖 They’ve been getting steadily worse around my starts, I need to order some beneficial nematodes. I just hope it’s warm enough I can put them in the outside containers too.
This is made for gnats....

Project Solarization is officially underway. 😁

I did break down and use Roundup on the mystery vine where it was heavily rooted in between and around those mineral tub beds at the fenceline. Nothing growing in the ground around there except weeds and that dang vine.

I still need to address the vine going bonkers between the 2 fences but I'll do that another time when it's not so hot & sunny

Have you tried a raised bed like a barrel planter with sterilized soil? Not sure if someone made that suggestion or not

Well, we planted a few in a pot and they did grow although small, it was just someplace to stick excess starts. I don’t recall specifically whether any of those suffered rotting but they were pulled and used without any curing. No, we have done any raised beds.

Usually if they are small, it's because 1 of 2 reasons:

1. They were too closely crowded together
2. They weren't fed or watered enough

Maybe try again? It sounds like you either have a fungus in your garden soil or it's just too heavy/clay and holding too much water.
