What did you do in the garden today?

Hubby decided TODAY that he would hate having baby chickens in the house ( they are also hatching TODAY) so guess what I did, today?!
That is NICE! Good job!

I don't mind having chicks in the house for the first couple weeks or so, but when they start flapping their wings and stirring up dust it time to go outside!

Nothing doing in the garden today. I'm still working on the chickens' day run, getting it set up so small chickens can't escape through/fly over the walls. Almost done now, just need to build/hang a door and hang some 7 foot tall plastic 1"x1" deer mesh/fence around the inside of the walls.

The little 8 week old chickens will think they went to heaven when I let them out into the extra 140 square feet of living area. Seeing all that grass outside of their reach will probably drive them crazy!

What is june drop 😮

My peach tree right now…
June Drop is a tree's natural thinning process. It's called June Drop but it actually happens at different times, depending on your climate zone. Mine typically happens in late May...

Anyway, your tree will naturally drop fruit for two reasons -

1. It will drop fruit that wasn't properly pollinated.

2. It will drop "excess" fruit beyond what it is capable of maintaining based on its maturity and condition. If the tree is young or stressed, it will drop more fruit. If it is healthy and mature, it will drop less fruit.

I made enough progress on the day run improvements today to be able to let the chickens out to explore. I tacked up plywood and OSB as a temporary fix to secure the doorway, and I'll build the door and hang it tomorrow. The girls seem to like the expansion to their living quarters.

And after I finish the build tomorrow I'll have a HUGE mess to clean up. There are lumber scraps and tools scattered everywhere!

Nice thing about it is that I spent ZERO$$$ for the project. I had all the scrap lumber, fencing and fasteners on hand. That is, except for the deer fence/mesh I'll be hanging on the inside of the walls as an extra escape deterrent. That cost me bit, but I'll use only around $5 worth of the roll I bought.

Recently I put my left over chicken feed into compost bin.

I was just wondering if anyone know if this is ok to do?

My chicken feed is crumble and mixed with water, at the end of the day there are the powdery part of the feed still uneaten, I was thinking that these are organic materials so I should be composting it, but today I am thinking it might not be ok as chicken feed have many other stuff in it.

Crappy weather day. Thunderstorms, wind and tornado watches. Still more rain coming. I have fly traps out and mosquito dunks. Need to use some fish fertilizer on new trees. Grafts on trees are slowly coming to life. More waiting. Each species is different growing. Still waiting on weather for walnut grafting. I think I have new information for success. Tried off and on for 40 years and only 2 takes. I now know I was too early.

I use the powder from my chicken feed directly in the garden as fertilizer. 4 parts powder, 1 part blood meal, 1 part bone meal, 1/4 part garden lime, 1 Tbl. powdered kelp. Everything grows like gang busters. Usually, we know gardens, anything can happen, lol. Also add leftover mash to compost. No problems.

I just put that on top of the next days feed. Are you fermenting the crumbles and water?
But it should be ok for the compost

The timer for the automatic chicken door on my bachelor coop has been broken for several weeks now. I finally managed to get around to building a new timer to trigger the actuator today. Cost me about $50 in parts but it works a lot nicer than the cheap Chinese junk timer that came with the door. Roosters are now fully secure again. 😁
