What did you do in the garden today?

Garden is watered. I might plant my tomatoes today. They've been outside hardening off the last week or so, so they're ready to plant.

It's amazing how much better they've done outside with natural sunlight in the mornings, compared to being inside under grow lights. Guess I need an outdoor greenhouse for starting next year's plants.

I think I've figured out where and when to plant my three varieties of beans so as to prevent cross pollination. The climbing Rattlesnake and Blue Lake beans will be planted early and about 50 feet apart. I'll plant the Provider bush beans much later in the season, mid July or so. Should work.

I'm probably not going to cover up the starts that are hardening off. They seem to be doing fine, and the nighttime lows are nothing they can't handle. I might even plant some things tomorrow at the perimeter of the garden, or in the raised beds. I'll have 49 tomato plants to put in in a few days, so anything I do before that is a help.

I'm going to need to dig DEEP holes for most of the 'maters, as they are tall and leggy. Some have the root bumps on the stem, so they are jonesing for dirt.

Beans are hard to get a cross but not impossible. Pollination occurs before flower is fully open. I have tried to get a cross by planting close and failed. Your plan should work fine.

I used Emergence C vitamin mix in my chicks drinking water to see how they react to it. They seem to like it, or it could be they don't know any better and drink it because it's there. Today, I switched to regular water, and tomorrow I will switch back to what I started them on, a standard poultry vitamin mix. I conclude that they don't know any better and drink it because it's there.

I use stevia sometimes. DH doesn't like it at all... Says it has an aftertaste. I've been trying to cut out as much processed stuff as possible. In my coffee, I use palm sugar which has a sort of caramel-y taste. In my simple syrups, I use raw, organic cane sugar. I should have just used that....but I figured the fruit would be sweet itself somewhat. I didn't expect the bitterness.... To be fair, the peaches were store bought...small and likely a little under ripe. I probably should have tasted the puree before actually cooking it.

I have been told (by a dietitian) palm sugar is bad. go figure.

Went out and looked at my green beans bed. The green beans that sprouted were gone. Again. The third time and I KNOW ITS ROLY POLYS! UGH..I've planted this bed three times now. I used Dr.Jacks organic big powder on them but we have had light off n on drizzle for couple days so that didn't work..any Roly poly advice? Rant over-

before planting put 2-3 chickens to have some fun. worked for me.

Thanks for the advice. I went ahead and planted the Rattlesnake and Provider beans. The Rattlesnake beans, two rows a foot apart on each side of the trellis. A single row of Provider bush beans starting just past the end of the trellis beans.

Provider are ready in around 55 days and pretty much one or two pickings then done, Rattlesnakes take more like 75 days and set on new beans all season long.

So I got around 16 row feet of Rattlesnake beans and a 16 foot row of Providers. With the Blue Lakes I'll plant later I might be selling beans.

I finally got the warm season crops started in the ground. I planted the non-San Marzano tomatoes in the bed with the shallots, which are all coming up. Then I planted the pole beans and Lima beans. I have a dental appointment tomorrow but I’m hoping to get okra and eggplant seeds in the ground. It’s warming up nicely now so direct seeding should come up pretty quick. Fingers crossed I can get the garden up on the slope planted up early next week.

I restarted my pumpkins! Finally!! Did it on Friday.

@Justagalwithchicks roly polies are my arch nemesis... DE helps and the organic slug and snail bait pellets. They murdered a lot of my pumpkins that I tried to start from seed.

Still fighting the gophers.... It's a little insane. I keep setting the same traps in the clover patch because every time I kill one, there's almost instantly another one in the same tunnel system. It's not right!! It's been one after another since October in this one area. It's so far away from the fences, I just don't understand!! So many gophers!!! 😭🥴

I spent my day in a giant solar array. I had a few minutes to just look at where I was standing at one point, it was really neat so I snapped a few photos. I have to go back tomorrow. At least the weather is mild.

I was standing in a service row, and that's in front of me, then behind me. So much solar.

We got the very first blackberries today!!! They were eaten before we left the bramble. 🤣 The only other thing I did in the garden, water. More watering. Getting tired of manual watering. I will work on the drip lines very soon.
Someone needs to be raising sheep under those panels. LOL
