What did you do in the garden today?

The expensive Standard White Cornish hatching eggs that I got were duds. I checked them last night on the 5th day, they looked scrambled under the light. I conclude that the sellers who send their eggs by priority mail are more reliable than those that send them by ground. I received eggs within a week with priority mail, and it took up to 2 weeks to 26 days by ground. Also, if it passes through San Francisco, it will be dead on arrival. The San Fransico postal service has issues; it always gets stuck in transit.

My experiment with air layering mango trees with 50% peat and 50% perlite has come to a close. I conclude that this mix works well with large size air layering pods and results were based on using Hormex Rooting Powder number 8 and the pods were watered weekly. The pods have a lip on the top for watering.

Finally a nice break in our weather. The last two days have been crazy rainy. We got nearly another 2 inches. When I checked on the grapevines on Thursday I found brown spots on one of my grapevines. I got copper to treat it but today was the first clear day I could apply it. I did notice a couple of little grub like worms on one of the leaves so I’m guessing I should spray a little neem oil on them in a day or two. I did manage to get some weeding done this morning. The shallots are growing like crazy. I noticed another potato plant coming up. The tomato plants are all doing well. I find this amazing with the weather being so inconsistent and crappy. There’s still so much to do and I’m hoping for the weather to cooperate so I can get caught up on the garden work. The grass is growing so fast with all the rain. It's so hard to keep up with it. I should have some time to do some weed whacking tomorrow. Fingers crossed.
