What did you do in the garden today?

Picked 3# 8oz of blackberries yesterday morning. There's likely another 10# out there ready to pick. I will chip away at it this morning. Probably going to make a bunch of syrup this year.

There are tomatoes out there, none ripe but plenty of green ones. Oddly enough none of my cherry varieties have fruit on them. I am very close to setting up a huge shade cloth over the whole garden area. I fertilized everything a few weeks ago. Lots of blossoms are just dropping off still it's frustrating. It's been in the high 70s for the last two weeks, and this week it's been in the high 80s. No end in sight for the warm weather.

Squash are dropping fruit before the blossoms are even mature. I don't get that either. Maybe the cool weather I guess. I've been careful with my watering.

Anyway, today I will plant bush beans in the bed the garlic was in. I may even plant some winter squash. Eventually I'll get everything planted.

I gave the butternut squash a good shot of water this morning. They seem to be doing ok in spite of being planted in a big pile of partially decomposed chicken run woodchips. Also watered the kale, cabbage, lettuce and what's left of the collards. I realized that cabbage worms like cabbage and collards but they don't touch the kale plants.

Pulled up the potatoes this morning as they'd decided they were done. Not a huge harvest, I only planted half a dozen seed potatoes, but for basically sticking them in the ground and then ignoring them I'm relatively pleased.

I have a bottle of BT, just haven't gotten around to mixing some up and spraying. I probably need to start spraying them once a week or so.

Picking jolopenos finally! I've got nearly a dozen tomato plants in flower but not a single tomato. My one single bell pepper is looking good lol. By beans are finally looking bushy! Squash have a bunch of blooms.

yeah, once I see the white cabbage moths fluttering around I already know I’ll have the loopers starting to dig into the cabbage. After using the BT maybe once every week or so the score is cabbage 1, loopers 0.

Best thing I've found for brassicas in general is since they don't need to be pollinated go ahead and cover them with fleece. It's the only sure-fire thing I've found. I was diligent with BT one year and they just laughed at me. Perhaps the batch was old.

Made about 3 dozen chocolate cupcakes using one of the giant squash. Still have one more to use up... I'm thinking about cubing it, batter and deep fry.

BTW, the chocolate cupcakes are amazing... So moist and yummy. You'd never ever guess it has a vegetable in it.

Good news is that I'm starting to find less and less SVB eggs...

I need to go collect more blackberries for another batch of simple syrup but it's really hot out there. I'm going to wait until later tonight when the temperature comes back down. Storms forecasted all weekend again... So much for kayaking!
