What did you do in the garden today?

I can understand that. We always tend to over plant (a bit) but then again we can, freeze, or pickle nearly everything we grow. Sort of a game with me, how far removed from the grocery store can I get?
That’s awesome!!!!!!!!!! If I had a bigger garden, I would probably try that but our garden is fairly small. The old one was at least double the size

I have three Roma tomato plants in the garden that I direct seeded out there. Right now the plants smaller than the ones I spent a couple months growing from seed indoors and transplanted, but I'm pretty sure they'll do ok.

If the direct planted tomato seed experiment works out I may never start tomatoes from seeds indoors again. Last year a volunteer tomato came up in the garden and it produced a lot of big Roma tomatoes, so I know it's possible. The seeds I planted in the garden this spring are from that volunteer plant.

Yep, same here. I'm getting closer to spending nothing at the store on veggies. Over the last year I doubt that I spent more than 30 or 40 bucks on fresh produce.

I find a few chanterelle mushrooms in the woods early fall, pick Oregon grape and salal berries when they ripen and try to eat some dandelion greens a few times a year too.

Now I have a couple little cockerel chicks so I can work on having a susatainable flock for eggs and meat. Yes, it's a fun game to play!

I give the big girls their freedom for a few hours and what do they do? Hang around the outside of the run. Sheesh!

I had a 6 hours date with the zero turn mower. Bleh:th
Was it all you thought it would be?
I think I might dig a bulb of garlic this week, see how it's doing. I am getting desperate for fresh garlic!
I was thinking the same thing. Garlic is looking weak this year so I’m kinda scared.

What I do buy I buy in bulk, and I buy all staple items. With the exception of a meal out from time to time everything we eat is made from scratch and at home. Don’t really consider myself a homesteader, I really am not, but I guess I’m heading in that direction. Its better this way…..you know……keeping me away from the general public.
You have me at the meat thing though, I could not bring myself to butcher one of the chickens, I just get too attached and see them as pets with benefits. However, we did end up with two roosters when we started the chicken adventure and we have one left so we should be able to increase the flock without too much trouble.
