What did you do in the garden today?

I put so much water into the ground around my tomatoes and peppers that my well couldn't keep up with the volume and the pump shut off. The ground water will replenish in a couple hours. I shouldn't need to water them again in at least a week, maybe two depending on the weather.

I also gave the beans in the same garden bed a good shot of homemade fertilizer and soaked it in with the hose. They should be good without more water for at least a week too.

ETA: hung a trellis for my second planting of Blue Lake pole beans.
40 + years ago a skunk would come at night to steal any dog food not eaten. Drove the dog crazy and sometimes sprayed to back the dog off. Windows open and skunk had to be dispatched so I could get a good nights sleep.

We've trapped both coons and possum and relocated them to the big state park where they can't bother people. Skunks are a different strategy... Normally my goats act as a general deterrent, but not always. If I smell skunks around the property, I put the dogs in the backyard. They bark at EVERYTHING which is usually enough to make a skunk decide to move along. There has only been one time when I've had to shoot one. It was in our garage and wouldn't leave. It looked dirty, unkempt, and disoriented. I thought for sure it had distemper or maybe rabies since it was not afraid of people. After DH & DS managed to get it out of the garage (without spraying, another red flag), they shot it. A day later, we realized it was a mama Skunk who had a den of newborn babies under the goat house, which is why she was so dirty. The guilt was crushing... I managed to collect 5 or 6 babies and take them to a wildlife rehab.
I feel you on this, if I had found babies after killing the mother I would have most likely been upset enough to cry. Interestingly, the two skunks I’ve caught were very calm, made no attempts at spraying and actually acted as though they’d be a good pet……we didn’t take that direction…..we relocated them.

So far momma hen and new chicks are in the coop with everyone else. Looks like she commandeers the coop during the day, and subsequently scratches the bedding up into heaps, but then settles into a spot at night right before the others come in to roost…….so far.
Awwwwwwww

So, went to check the garden to see how crippling the heat has been on everything today. As I walked passed the coop all of the chickens were out lounging around in their yard INCLUDING our new mother AND her new chicks. Mind you the coop is elevated about two feet above the ground. Everyone just hanging out like nothing new has happened.

I used to feel that way about other predators and their young.

Until I was missing a bunch of poults. Later found wings and feet scattered about.
Not for the faint of heart.
Although I really don’t want to kill anything I can see your point. We have rabbits that like, as expected, the vegetable garden and refuse to be live trapped. I’ve killed a few over the years reluctantly but my patience has vanished with the inability to catch them alive.
