What did you do in the garden today?

I celebrated today by digging out all of my garlic, 59 heads. There were 60 but I dug one a couple weeks ago. I layed them all out on top of an empty rabbit cage in the sun to cure for a couple days, then into the shade they go.

I think that overall they're bigger than last year's heads. I'll save about 100 of the largest cloves for planting this October. All of this garlic is the progeny of 9 little plants I started from Home Depot seed garlic in 2022.

I need to dump a couple big buckets full of chicken run compost into the garlic bed and work it in so it's ready for planting in a few months.
My garlic did terrible and others in the area say the same. I have been planting the best for a decade. They were in a new bed. So maybe it's the bed. Of course I didn't plant as much as I usually do.
I planted 2 different softneck 50 of each....16 came up. Very small heads. ...one worthy of replanting.

Several different hard necks a hundred total. Maybe 50 came up, they aren't quite ready yet.
I ordered some new stock.

about half my garlic plants were falling over and they were turning brown so I knew it was time to dig. When do you plant your garlic?

Sometime in the fall before the ground freezes. Usually October, but since the ground freezes later anymore maybe I should be the beginning of November.
Although the ones I missed look better but small because of being crowded.
Maybe I'll do half earlier

Got the garden weeded for the most part, took 3 hours. Japanese beetles have started their onslaught, crush as many as I can.
I've been hunting JBs daily now for 3 days, and will continue until they're done for the season. I capture them and give them to the chickens. They know what it means when I say, "Bug snack!"

Picked about a pound of snow and snap peas and snipped some dill for supper tonight to go with the potatoes I dug out yesterday. Going to cook them all together and have with a pan fried ribeye steak for supper tonight. My son made a fantastic stuffed crust pizza from scratch for lunch today, so fair is fair. I'll cook tonight.

After picking peas I cut off one row of pea vines and gave them to the chickens. They don't seem to like eating pea leaves for some reason.

I plant my garlic 6 inches apart in rows, with the rows 6 inches apart. I try to make the most use of the space in my garden. But maybe I'd get larger bulbs if I space them further apart.
