What did you do in the garden today?

Yesterday was THE day of the week to spend in the garden: cooler, much lower humidity, and mostly overcast. But I wasted the day buying a car instead. It's way, way down on my list of favorite things to do.

At least it doesn't top my list of most hated things to do.

Anyway. I did the first picking of black raspberries! The birds are finding them, so I need to get there before they do. The dang birds got all my cherries! :tongue

DH is finishing trellis in back of garden and we had a massive thunderstorm! I guess when they said the rain would be over in July they didn’t mean thunderstorms 😬

I think I want to keep this rooster out of all the young roosters. We haven’t introduced them to the main flock yet. I’m kinda scared. We have 22 hens and I rooster in main flock so I think they could handle another rooster.
What should we name him? DH said Foghorn

It was supposed to rain today, but so far everything has completely missed us... 😕 Guess that means I should probably go out and water the container plants before they get any more crispy....

Brought in 2 very small sugar pie pumpkins and a cushaw squash whose vines had been killed by SVB. Does cushaw ripen off the vine? I've never grown it before. The bottom part has turned green but the top 3/4 is still yellow. Is that normal?
They say if it's ripened enough, it will continue - but I've never had much luck with that.
Hubby and I have been working out on our elliptical for over a year now. I'm 63 and I feel like I'm in better shape than I was in my 30s.
I love that. That's my goal as well these days. After all my back surgeries my health suffered and I gained a lot of weight. I've been working out, lifting weights, etc. It's so important, especially as older women, to keep those bones (and everything else) healthy.
I've seen you posting over the last few weeks! Your presence has been missed.
Aw, thank you!
Golly, save purslane, eat fresh, dehydration, good nutrition.
Ugh, I'm such a picky eater, I just can't do it. I literally gagged eating broccoli the other day, and that's one I've always been able to eat! I annoy myself.

So silly story - Sat I lifted the netting on the spaghetti squash bed to pollinate & a bumble bee flew in. I couldn't get him out & was in a hurry so I said I'd come back in a couple hours & find him. DH & I joked he was gonna hafta work for a couple hours! Things happened & I forgot till the next day but I couldn't find him, I searched & searched - I looked in all the open flowers, nothing. I figured I killed him and it really bothered me. 🥹 I was just out there pollinating & I found him in a flower! He had SO much pollen on him I didn't think he'd even be able to fly, but he did! I destroyed the netting and tendrils getting him out, but he's free after days and I don't feel like a killer anymore, lol.

Supposed to be hot today again and the incoming rain isn’t supposed to manifest until tonight so I snuck out to water everything - only to find my water pressure is terrible. 🤨 Had enough to get the job done and not much else.

I’ve seen white butterflies around my kale over the last day or so so I sprayed that with neem oil and BT.

Peas are still in the process of drying up but I got maybe half a dozen small pods that seemed ready. I also planted some new ones in with the romaine and put some of the peels from the lemonade lemons over the top because it looked like something was digging in that planter and I remember someone here using those for pest repellent. Hope it works.

The main planting of potatoes seems to be dying off so 🙏 for a good harvest there!

Trail of Tears beans are starting to bloom too.

He's so pretty! I like the name Calico, or Patchy.

What Neem oil do you use? We have not had good results with Neem. It seems nothing organic will work on squash bugs and cucumber beetles. I just have to check twice daily for eggs and culling the pests. 😎

All the indeterminate tomatoes are starting to ripen. Gonna be covered up in tomatoes in a couple of days. One of them, 'Galahad' has come down with what I believe to be verticillium wilt. I've always had a problem with this and chose the tomato varieties I did to deal with it. A couple of the dahlias have it also while the others seem to be as healthy as can be. I'm going to harvest the ripe tomatoes today before culling this plant.

The one right next to it, 'Bobcat' is flourishing so far. I'll know not to plant 'Galahad' next year.

And the bell peppers (also hybrids although I can't remember the variety) are doing well :) .

I foresee stuffed peppers in our future.

Finally having to start watering everything although we have a higher chance of rain in the next couple of days. Fingers crossed!
