What did you do in the garden today?

BT is a natural bacteria called Bacillus Thuringiensis. It causes worms and grubs to basically stop eating and they die. Since SVB larva drill inside a hollow squash vine and eat the plants from the inside out, normal pesticides don't get to them. You can find SVB larva inside your plants by looking for their frass waste in the daytime or by shining a high powered flashlight through the stems at night. By injecting the BT inside the stem, it infects the larva and kills them before they do lethal damage to your plants. Here's a video

I bought a bag of Espoma garden lime and worked a half cup into the soil around all the tomatoes and seven pepper plants. Emptied the bag. Pruned the lower leaves from the tomatoes too.

The measured application of tablespoons per square foot of garden space is supposed to raise the pH from 5 to 6.5. When I watered it in there was a reaction around some of the plants, like a mild bubbling version of adding vinegar to baking soda.

I'll put a layer of sifted chicken run compost around the plants next, water it in, then replace the mulch I raked off before I treated with the lime.

No real garden work today. I did do a walk around. It’s been so hot and dry, forecasted rain has not happened. The pole beans and black beans are doing really well despite the weeds, Lol! The tomatoes in the big garden are coming along slowly. My acorn squash sprouts are getting their secondary leaves. While hanging out with my young hens I was able to snap a photo of this green backed hummingbird. His mate visits me with a 4 second fly by occasionally. They come back every year to nest.

Still trying to find a window to hay. I THOUGHT I was going to cut tomorrow, but chance of rain Monday night, and we'd have to bale Tuesday after the dew burned off and chance of rain for the week starts about 3pm Tuesday. UGH. And it WILL be hot this weekend, but the humidity will be HIGH and the wind LOW. Guess I'll shove it another week or so. Good GRIEF!
Morning garden walk through - went and got the duct tape, came back and started removing SB eggs. Followed up with injecting BT in the vines for SVB. Going to fertilize my little corn patch and get ready for our crazy heat wave coming.

Is the telepathy working?
Here too. They have a narrow window of temperatures where they set fruit, and then another narrow window for ripening, Early heat here and no wind, and we didn't have the pollination going, now we're wet and fighting blight or fungus. Reminds me I need to spray again. It'll just be a late season for us. That's ok.

Are you on 2nd or 3rd cut?
