They aren't bad. I've got mine down on the lower level right below me. I don't hear it. Cost to run depends on your power rates. Average batch runs for two days. I don't really notice a huge jump in my bill. I don't have a handy grocery store, so I used to can a LOT, and throw a LOT of that away, as it doesn't last nutrition-wise, and took up a lot of room.TSC has the middle sized ones for around $2800 sometimes. Of course, that doesn't include the add ons that you really want to have with it. And they aren't cheap to run. Or quiet, I think.
I can get 2 quarts of freeze dried, tomato puree powder into a half pint jar. Vacuum seal that and it's good for 20 years at full nutritional value.
The amount of onions, garlic, celery and potatoes I have done is INSANE. With just two of us here, I can just pull out what I need for one meal, or one person, and nothing is wasted.
So to each their own.
