What did you do in the garden today?

You know it’s hot when 5 day old chicks are choosing outdoor shade to sleep rather than the brooder with heat lamps.

Garden is doing pretty well, slogging thru the weeds though - it’s been a banner year for weeds.

We actually got cucumbers!!!! Enough to make pickles!!! I used predatory nematodes a few times last year, and a couple times this year- I’ve seen maybe 2 or 3 cucumber beetles! On the other hand, neighbor isn’t gardening, so all his squash bugs and SVB invaded my garden (he has, for years, just dumped his Halloween pumpkins into his garden then let the seeds grow next year. Bugs were so bad I could see the mass moving from my yard due to so many squash bugs). My zucchini did terrible, I even had SVB invaded the squash itself and found SVB larvae in the actual squash!! There must have been fierce competition for the vines I guess.

Kid is done with all school/kid related activities. 4-H completed, goats are going to new home in a week if all goes according to the plans! The chicks above were picked out if random bin at a hatchery- now that we don’t have to plan for next year 4H entries, we got whatever we pleased without a care for requirements!

Otherwise, very busy with many things. Haven’t been on this thread for awhile, I think I’m 400 pages behind!

I put some more peas in where the potatoes had been. Watered, fertilized, sprayed everything with BT. I hope the fertilizer gives the squash a boost; it’s not as droopy as it was a few days ago but when I compare it to the melon in the next container over - which is younger, as its predecessor died from the month of cold and rain at the start of the season, but is also easily four times its size at this point - I can’t help but feel unenthusiastic about its chances of producing.

Also, note to myself: next time only one melon plant per box. They are quite capable of taking the box over by their lonesome.
