What did you do in the garden today?

I am happy to report that my feet biting spoiled male chicks are not man eaters. I used to hold them once a day while they were chicks and stopped after I took them outside. Whenever I went outside, they would run up to me and bite my feet to let me know that they were hungry. I corrected that behavior by knocking their heads with a plastic bottle. Now as they are 3 months old, I can walk pass them without any issues.

The hens are still chasing them around and they sleep in another open-door coop. I saw them in the main coop this evening, but they got chased out. I think they will stage a coup d'état next month when their hormones kick in.

I am rooting for them.

a hawk tried to pick up an indian runner duck. a stampede (about 40 ducks) chased him away. I wonder if he could have lifted any duck as he was about the same size or smaller. in 2 years only 1 small silkie disappeared so I guess a hawk got her. I don't keep silkies and bantams any more. better safe than sorry. young birds are contained.

only watering today.

That would have been great to see! :D

I just have to get through 5 more hours and then I’ll be home for a long weekend. I need to start some more kale, cabbage, and maybe Swiss chard; the majority of them failed. I think the weather/temperature is getting too all over the place to keep starting seeds outside.

On a side note, has anyone ever grown tree collards? I am thinking about trying to find some Michigan tree collard cuttings

Soil test results were low for potassium and nitrogen, which explains the poor potato results. Guess I need to pick up some soil amendments this weekend!
I once (years ago) had a soil test at the county fair put on by the state Ag Uni. It was $3 for a quick onsite basic test or $15 for them to take your sample back to the lab at campus for the more indepth analysis. I opted for just the basic test.

The fella that took my money and my sample checked N on the paper before even opening the baggie. I asked him why he'd done that. His answer was along the lines of "all the plants use a lot of nitrogen and our native soil doesn't always have enough".

I told him the sample I'd brought wasn't native, it was a custom blend I'd spent time researching and putting together specifically for what I wanted to grow which wasn't leafy greens.

My brother thinks I'm sometimes quick to react negatively when I think someone is being dishonest or unfair. He may be right.

Some of the indoor basil was trying to bolt on me so it got a good trim today.

Thank you, I feel better about buying the kit and doing it myself now!

Yesterday I picked all the cukes I could find and added them to what I had in the fridge, chopped them in the food processor along with onions and peppers and made a year's supply of relish, both dill and sweet, 15 half pints.

Today I'm halfway done picking beans, three pounds so far.
