What did you do in the garden today?

The first 3 eggs hatched as planned and the other two were not piping, so it's all good. I am not sure what color these chicks will turn out to be, but they look yellow. Two Isa Brown rooster parents look exactly like Rhode Island Reds and one look like the traditional Isa Brow white and brown color. The hens were the second generation of a cross between a Breese rooster and a Cornish cross hen. I am hoping for a few of them to be fast fat growers that pull on the Cornish x side. These will become my line breeders, but I don't think I can mate them back to my old hens. They are too old and hardly laying.

The other two late eggs hatched, and I have 5 more eggs staggered in time the same way. I just put 3 of them on lock down and moved 2 with a 3-day spread in time in the incubator that just cleared.

I am surprised at how fertile my 3 young roosters were. I think I will end up with a 100% hatch rate.

Congrats on the new babies

I cut into the biggest of the melons. It tasted a bit like cucumber and a bit like cantaloupe. Not sure how much of that was normal and how much was because it wasn’t ripe. But considering how lousy the season was for melons, I’m counting it a successful harvest. Might cut up some of what’s left and make a salad with the chard tomorrow. 🤔

I do wish the seeds had had more time to mature. Out of the whole melon I only got a few dozen that didn’t float to the top, and I’m iffy about those.

Tell me more about melon seeds and floating? I just rinse mine in a sieve and dry them in a paper towel. Is this something I should be doing?

The seed saving video I watched said if the seeds floated they’re less likely to be viable. I admit I can’t confirm that, this is the first time in my memory I’ve grown melons of any type.
