What did you do in the garden today?

No they are not spoiled. They are so well loved. I know my chickens have full run of the property. They go to bed at night but they are not locked up because the property is fenced on all 4 sides. My chickens don't stink which means they're not spoiled because spoiled would mean they were flawed and they are flawless.
We have about a 1000 s.f. fenced yard for our chickens with an automatic door to the coop. They’re let out into the yard, about 1.25 acres, to free range in the evening for a couple of hours. Unlike your property we are not fenced in so we supervise their free range time, this is why we let them out in the evening. It’s much easier to let them corral themselves at bedtime rather than attempting to do it against their will during the day. Of course, me being me, after spending a small fortune for an automatic door (which I really like) I still close it manually because I just have to check to be sure everyone is ok and to do a head count. My evening head counts are usually done four or five times……..just to be sure.

I miss being able to free range my girls! The neighbors dogs have ruined my joy of sitting on the deck and watching the girls peck and scratch. They're still spoiled rotten, but from the confinement of the German shepherd proof coop/run.

We set ours free on the whole acreage. The icelandics take off and head for the north 40 acres, sometimes talking their more stupid little sisters to go with them. The prairie grass over there is 4 feet high (no cattle on it this season). It takes them forever to decide to come home, and you have to be yelling for them so they can follow your voice. The predators are an all day thing here. You just have to hope for the best and hope there is better, slower prey somewhere else.

This stray bunny is driving me crazy. She refuses to use a litter box and keeps flipping her water bowl. Grrrrrr... She definitely needs an outdoor pen. Since we also have a buck too... I'm thinking about breeding them for meat. I've been toying with the idea of building an 8 ft x 8 ft hoop house pen for the doe. I'll keep the buck inside for the time being. I just don't really want to spend a bunch of money on it before Christmas... 🤔 I do have a lot of spare materials though so I might not have to...

What did you do in your garden today?

I picked a bunch of Rattlesnake green beans and Cherokee wax beans, a few tomatoes, three eggplants, some broccoli shoots, and jalapenos. Pretty happy with today's harvest!

I planted some winter pea 🫛 to fix some nitrogen in the beds. I also gathered some Nasturtium and Marigold seeds.
