What did you do in the garden today?

You've got a lot of lemons on your tree, too! Good year for lemons
I made some homemade lemonade this evening... I drink a lot of lemonade, but I really want to do something more with some of the lemons. I'm thinking of some lemon-blueberry muffins maybe.

I'm sure I read something somewhere about mahonias not responding well to transplanting, but that might have been about digging them up and moving them.
When I first moved to the current house some 25-30 years ago, I traded plant cuttings with a gardener in the PNW. (drastically different climate)

I don't remember what I sent to her but I received 4 semi-hardwood mahonia cuttings of about 6" wrapped in a damp paper towel.

As per their handwritten instructions, I set them in a glass of water on the windowsill for just a couple of days then dipped them in rooting hormone and potted them up.

When the weather was stable outside I planted them. The spot I chose was about 6 ft from trunk on the NW side of a big maple. They got morning shade and afternoon dappled shade with full evening sun. Those little twigs became a nice size bush that I kept trimmed to about 4 ft tall and across.

It thrived disease- and pest-free for years and years until I got tired of getting stabbed (not just poked but stabbed) by the leaves when trimming or working around it.

Yet I bet those barking dogs are A-OK.

or loud music. one of the reasons I left city is loud music everywhere at any time. when I was a kid we enjoyed to listen to the live music from the restaurants. the old technology loudspeakers were pleasant.

On Saturday I finished the wiring to the new shed and to the coop, power and light now available to both. Now, while digging the trench to run the cable from the shed to the coop my helper chickens decided to begin filling the trench back in AS I was digging it out, the others just hung out and watched. Anyway, got it buried and everything hooked up so we won’t need to string extension cords for the heated waterer any longer, nor use a flashlight for evening bed checks. Naturally, the spot with the most digging attention as of Saturday is the spot of the buried wiring(which is run inside pvc pipe) and I’ve had to re-rake the area several times since. Just noticed this a.m. that they’re back at it. I think its a taunt on their part actually.
