What did you do in the garden today?

My stem lettuce was taking long to sprout, so I did a search on it and found that lettuce is a cold sprouting plant, and many varieties won't sprout at 80-85F, so heat mats at 80-90F should not be used.

AI instructions for my zone
  1. Start seeds in shade, in a cool area
  2. No dome, no heat mat and no grow light
  3. Turn on grow light after seeds sprout
  4. Mist lightly and keep medium moist
  5. Optional, refrigerate seed for 24 hours
Heat mat = slower germination, lower germination, or no germination.
Cooler soil = faster, more reliable sprouting.

Most seeds I start don't need heat. Unless I have them in a 55f back room in the winter 😂

Winter solstice 3 months until spring. I had a wren get into the house. Before daylight I opened the garage door with the light on. I never saw the wren. So when I went into the house it must have slipped past me. The chase was on when I saw it. Got it shooed into the garage and then outside. I never seen a wren in winter before. :idunno

Another successful hatch, nine chicks out of nine eggs. I'm not sure if the RIR cockerel fathered any. Maybe it'll be more obvious later. Right now it looks like the NH cockerel did all the work.

was it a Caroline wren? Those I see in winter. Little bit bigger than a house wren

We have a Carolina wren that hàd babies on our front porch early this month. Is it normal for wrens to be hatching babies in December? We live in Tennessee - Midwest. While warm today it is usually much colder with a little snow.

I know they have several broods a year, but this seems a little late
