What did you do in the garden today?

But wild raspberries (which are bitter gross) and wild blackberries (which are good but have wicked thorns from hell) all seem to grow gangbusters. Invasive even... But I can't seem to get domestic raspberries to grow more than 2-3 years before they go toes up.

we have wild berries by the stream. maybe there is no enough water for them on my property.

Most raspberries propagate by layering or cuttings. Your best bet is to find someone who has them and ask for cuttings. My blackberries are so prolific they're almost invasive. I'm always happy to share cuttings and new starts when I can. The berries they produce are so big and so sweet that I HATE throwing them away.

I am the only one that tries to grow raspberries. people here ask me why I grow food when I can buy it :( unfortunately pretty soon they will understand why I keep animals and grow my own food. they have already been complaining about the prices and say they cannot buy anymore all they want to. but their brain is too busy with tik tok, fb, etc. to work properly.

I got chickens because of the egg prices during COVID and I asked if my kids would eat the eggs but I didn't know they wouldn't eat them. I have started my garden for the fact that food prices are so ridiculous right now and I don't see them going down, only up. I wish I had enough property for animals other than birds. I can only hope that my kids change their minds about their food not coming from a store.

Meat rabbits take less room than chickens and are a very affordable meat source.

And their manure can be put directly into your garden without composting.

Rabbit is delicious, but I can't eat, let alone butcher, something I can pet and name. I know, I know, call me weak, but I know my limitations. Maybe I can find someone local who'd trade eggs for meat.

Ok so I said I would report back... we were talking about whether starting potatoes indoors would work with their water light and soil needs for those of us with short growing seasons and unheated greenhouses

Well turns out... it works! My red potatoes are coming up! I buried my eyed reds on February 6th so I'm getting just about the same sprout speed as I normally do outside! they're in my laundry room so at regular in hosue ambient temp and I have 2 small gooseneck grow lights on the bag

Folks asked for an update on how the started inside potato bags are going. February 6th plant date. They're actually starting way better/faster than when I normally wait to start them outside after frost. I'll be curious to see if tuber formation is any better or if its just plant growth thats better. Typically in a 5 gallon bag with this many sprouts if I were growing my normal way outside i would dig up about 10 to 12 pounds of red potatoes at harvest since i harvest a little early so we'll have to see!
