What did you do in the garden today?

I'd heard garlic helped repel voles in the garden, so planted it last fall all around the perimeters of every bed. I can definitely report back that it doesn't work!
Dang.
I tried planting garlic in the hole with tomatoes and potatoes along with the perimeter..... the moles and voles larfed .
I put some granular stuff out and that seems to help. I think the Active Ingredient was Castor Oil
I think I'm going to get some Castor Oil!
Have you tried catching voles with mousetraps? I caught one inside the shop once, so it can be done.

I found this method online. Haven't tried it myself.

I might try this in the green house. I've caught voles in there before.

Speaking of traps in the green house... Something is eating the bait out of two traps, but not setting the trap off! It's a covered snap trap, and I smash a peanut into the bait receptacle. The critter can go in from either end, but somehow they have figured out how to nibble the peanut and not touch the trigger.

When buying new fruit trees I like fully dormant ones. I take scion twigs for grafting. This has saved me several times when the new transplant dies. Here is the math a scion stick is 5 to 6 $ plus shipping making a 20$ tree a bargain. My Ayers pear tree was saved like this. The original died but the graft saved me.

Pulled weeds today. Trying to beat the seeding of the brome grasses and whatever the purple flowing curling tail seed plant is. I've cut down the population pretty good but I know I'll miss some.

Spent most of the day getting things ready for funeral processions for my DHs Grandpa.

We're going to Ridgecrest tomorrow for the viewing and funeral. The funeral is Friday, the day before DH birthday. We're taking our camper and going to camp with the family since we'll all be together. Try to make some good out of it all.
Sorry for your losses

Here is a tip. I have done the coffee filter, cloth, and paper towel methods to germinate. I use soil moist granules now. A polymer. Used as moisture control in some mixes. I also put in potting mix. A little bit expands a lot. Just did some seeds. My lettuce is sprouting in the flat.

Sorry for your loss. My brother's funeral is Friday also.
