What did you do with your flock today?

Well I did get a teeny bit done yesterday. I moved the hamburgs out to a coop. They've gone from popcorning towards me to popcorning away from me...just like that. All that space is scary to them right now. Can't wait for them to settle and start to enjoy it. They also don't like treats yet except for wet mash. Yesterday they were too scared to even want that, but they should settle fast.

Javas laid three eggs so far so I took the oldest and popped it in the incubator. 🤞 Flights doing his job and we have good eggs.

Funny bag!

I won't really worry about them going into the coop at night once the run is secure. Going to leave the chickens' entry open 24/7. I'm actually going to encourage them to roost in the run overnight, and use the coop mainly for egg laying, and maybe in cold weather if they want.

Maybe I'll get the run secured today, and then I'll move the food and water out there and see if they spend the night in the new space.

I bought one of these whistles, thinking I could train them to come to its sound when they're out free ranging. I'd just whistle myself if I could perform consistently. LOL And I bought an orange one on purpose. Thought I'd try using swinging it in a circle as a visual cue too.

I like the idea of the whistle 👍I'm sure it will work perfect.
I use a bell, that way anyone can call my chooks back into the run. Including husband and grandkids. 😉

That's how I do too. Winters I remove the run roosts so they'll sleep warmer in the coops though. Love to know how the whistle works out!

Now, I'm just guessing that the whisle will work. LOL

I need to figure out my "language" for my whistle, maybe on long blast as a "call to treats" at first, and after they're conditioned to that, it would be mainly a "come here" call. And maybe three short, sharp blasts for "danger", or "hide", to warn of hawks or other predators. ??? Like I said, I don't know if this will work, but it'll be fun to experiment with.

Oh my! I LOVE that! Is it a dish cloth? Whatever it is, I must have one! It's so,so true for all animals in my experience. On Friday, we had a fledgling blackbird stuck behind our fireplace and it's been back every day since for a mealworm handout!
It is a dish cloth. I also find the premise to be true with every animal.... But i have taught my cats to sit in command, and apparently that's wierd... 😂

TSC also had this a few weeks back (I take pictures so I don't buy the nick nacks - pictures are cheaper)

Here's a pic of the side of the run I worked on yesterday. I'll close up the gaps between the roof and wall today. And I'll use those round fence posts as part of my skirting system.

I can't handle bending over and stapling the HWC to the bottom of the run baseboard, so I decided to staple strips of HWC to the round posts, then lay them down against the baseboard. Then I'll spike the posts to the ground through a couple of pre-drilled holes. That's my plan, anyway.

Cat colony feeding went smoothly and quickly this morning and I don't feel wiped out like I did yesterday, at least not yet. I did not mention that I got yelled at by a crazy person and honked at by drunk &/or loaded people so that probably added to my exhaustion. That, mothers day and because I could. Nice having that luxury. Got my kibble clean up crew working hard this morning while hubby sleeps and the sun slowly rises.

Did not scrub coops yesterday, slept instead, so got to do it today. Did change 1 nestbox material because I dropped and broke 1 egg. Girls gave me 16 yesterday.
Need to bleach waterers and add vitamins to fresh water to boost the crew. Looking forward to focusing on the chickens and only chickens today.

And you don't have to clean them...win win!

Well, I had enough energy to close up the spaces between the rafters at the top of my run wall today. I looked it over and found three more little openings that I filled in. All that's left to make it secure is to add the skirting, then I'll move the feed and water into the run and lock the birdies out of the coop for a while so they get used to roosting overnight in the run. Maybe tomorrow...

Scrubbed the coops today (yippee!)

I had to wait till this eve to do one nest box and will finish last box first thing in the morning if I can. Working girls gave me another 17 eggs today.

Treated chooks to roasted chicken carcass and fairly full contents of Dyna. 20230515_182813.jpg
Both zappers bulbs burnt out last week and the Tougher Than Tom's have not caught 1 mosquito in 2 weeks ☹️
Forgot to add vitamins to the chickens waterers and did not get to resetting any of the fly bait stations.
Did start 7 bags till Forest plopped on my cutting table and took a nap. Always a sign to take a break. May have another special order.
Gave 4 dozen eggs away.

Not 1 mosquito??? That’s really disappointing! 😫

Your coops look gorgeous, I’m impressed!

I need to find some people to give free eggs to, I have an egg problem 🤪 Pardon the messy kitchen 😫
