What did you do with your flock today?

Yesterday I brought home a load of pine shavings to freshen up the girls coops and today I'm going to get a couple done. In this heat that will be about my limit.
Can you send a bit of that heat our way? Not much, just a bit to be mutually beneficial. We've just had the wettest July on record.

I agree, and it honestly breaks my heart. The roosters have so much personality and love to give :( There are definitely ones that are not great, but there are also hens that are not so great!

I know some people will think I am silly, but I have also felt a stronger connection to the boys. There is something in their eyes and the way they look at you it feels like you understand them and they you and earning their respect feels good. My favorite hens are wonderful and friendly but the deeper connection feels lacking in comparison. I'm sure I am the reason (genetics) Aria is ALWAYS in love with the boys :D So it is my fault! :p
I totally get that. My connections always seem stronger with the boys since I started keeping them. I love the girls to bits and I do have a strong bond with Gladys. I had an incredible bond with Connie too but the bond I have with Ferdy (and his dad, Sylv, when he was alive) is something else.

Built the gate up in my garden. They keep flying over the gate and making themselves at home with the endless snacks.View attachment 3596025
Her face *nothing to see here🤣*
Still gave them a watermelon treat.

Ok, hear me out. My chickens do the most damage scratching in the dirt and digging up plants. I grow a lot, specifically to feed them, but for me too.

I built a garden that allows them to forage but keep keeping the plants alive by either encasing them (either with Avian netting or fencing) or cutting a scrap of hardware cloth to lay around the bottom of the plant. They try scratching around the plant and hit the hardware cloth, it makes them move on to another spot. They don't rip up the plant.

It's working like a charm (knock on wood). I got the idea from putting it on my planters for overwintering because they were dirt bathing in them and digging up my roots. That's working like a charm too.

Meanwhile, my garden grows and my chooks eat a very wide variety of vegetation. Another upside, pest control on any ground plants, they eat the lower leaves on Vining plants (less pruning for me) and it's somewhat self fertilizing.

I would gladly send some of our heat too! Although I must admit after our wettest winter in decades...I prefer the heat and I NEVER thought I would EVER say that! :p So I would just give you the heat, no need to share your weather :D

I'd gladly swap some heat for rain! It's been a dry dry monsoon at our house! No good gully washer rains...just a couple light drizzles that feel more like getting spit on.
