What did you do with your flock today?

O I love her shoulder markings! Shes an unusual little beauty. I have an aloha cemani mix with shoulders something like that! The rest of hers a lot plainer than your girl though. I'll try to remember to get pictures of her today. Think you'll like her too. ❤️
She is pretty!!! I’m pretty positive her dad and mom are bantam Cochins but momma is a mottled Cochin and daddy has mottled, Mille fleur, and black. She is the only pure I have. The others died shortly after hatching. But I do have other crosses of theirs. And they are pretty, just nothing like this!

I can’t wait to see your baby!!!

Don’t think so. I have been taking them to swap meets and just putting it out there. I basically am not just giving them away to others because I know they just want to eat them. Especially when they want 4 Roos. And then walk away when I tell them what I would want for them. Not even trying to barter with me. Which if I’m going to give them away, it will be to someone in need. I kinda figured I would have roosters so I didn’t get attached to the ones I hatched because if they did turn out to be males than how could I have them processed. 😞

I did hatch one REALLY pretty baby. I was holding my breath on this one for a long time and it’s for sure A GIRL!! I’m so happy about this one for sure!!!
She is really pretty!! :love Look like a girl for sure, yay!

Roos get such a poor deal all round. The egg industry puts them in industrial mincers at a day old, they get abandoned or bought to fight illegally with... Or, like you say, unscrupulous people obtain them to eat with no thought for the bird's welfare. It's different, of course, if you're raising them yourself for meat.
At least things are slowly changing this side of the pond. The German egg industry now uses laser technology to sex eggs at just a couple of days development so male eggs are diverted to the food industry when the cells have barely divided. France has started to use it too and the EU is soon to make it mandatory.
The sooner this tech becomes available to backyard keepers, the better IMHO.
I agree, and it honestly breaks my heart. The roosters have so much personality and love to give :( There are definitely ones that are not great, but there are also hens that are not so great!

I know some people will think I am silly, but I have also felt a stronger connection to the boys. There is something in their eyes and the way they look at you it feels like you understand them and they you and earning their respect feels good. My favorite hens are wonderful and friendly but the deeper connection feels lacking in comparison. I'm sure I am the reason (genetics) Aria is ALWAYS in love with the boys :D So it is my fault! :p

Looks like Penelope is up to her old tricks. Last Wednesday she laid 3 eggs in 24 hours! The last one had a very thin shell - which is hardly a surprise - and cracked on impact with the floor. Yep, after a period of laying in the nest box, she's gone back to laying wherever she happens to be standing 😔
She laid two eggs today, one first thing in her coop and the second on my slipper. At least that one had a super-soft, furry landing 🤣
