What did you do with your flock today?

Last year, before the cages went around them, the deer and chickens destroyed the hosta leaves. Now that they are inside the 6' fence, and inside cages, they are mostly all there. The chickens have gotten what they can reach through the 2x4" fence, which will be chicken wire next season.

Now, how many different flocks do you have, and how many total, without using chicken math.
I don't have enough fingers, toes, hands, feed, etc. I honestly don't know. After some sales, some loses, who knows. I just feed and water and let the eggs drop. I do have someone coming early in the morning that is interested in some roosters. I have a few RIR's that I hatched in March that are ready for putting with a few good hens. Those have some sisters that need to move on. I can't keep on keeping on like I'm going. I could use a spreadsheet and get a close estimate based on purchases - know loses - know sales. Maybe. I have my oldest granddaughter coming to see me in September while she is in the states. Her hubby is stationed in Hawaii and I haven't seen her since her wedding over ten years ago. She might could help with the math. :)

Oh I do know how many flocks. 1 RIR, 1 Delaware, 1 Dark Cornish, 1 White Jersey Giant, 1 Cornish Rock Cross, 1 American Bresse, 1 All American Meat Mutts. Planned for the spring are 3 small pens of 1 roo and 4 pullets of 3 different colors of Aseels. Aseels were used in the make up of the Dark Cornish. I want to use them with some other breeds like maybe some Speckled Sussex to see what just might hatch.

Where am I?View attachment 3597623View attachment 3597624but mom, I was just trying to help. My name is Onyx, and I was just making mom think I was done going over fences and getting stuck when I was just chilling in the yard yesterday. She didn't know I was in the garden until I went by her picking berries and opened my big beak. I could've had a play day in the garden.
Just beautiful! I am going to remind you of this when you get the wintertime blues. It is all worth it ♡♡♡

Count them while they are sleeping? Curiosity is getting to me now. 😁

I've been working on the run for my chickens, first babies I've had in a long time. Roberto runs up to me every time I open the top of the tank we're using for a brooder... he's decided he likes to sit on my head. I know in my mind that his amazing personality will change as he goes through roo puberty, but I don't want him to change. I love his sweet little fluffy butt just the way he is.View attachment 3597194

O my gosh...I can see why! What a little doll! ❤️

I occasionally get asked how many chickens I have and I always say less chickens then beer, so it's all good. Technically not true, but it gets a laugh and saves me from counting. 😁

I grow beets for the greens rather then the roots. The leaves taste delicious ❤️. Not too unlike spinach, you just have to discard the stem as the plant ages. It gets tough. A neighbor asked if he could have the roots the one year but by the time I'm done harvesting leaves, the roots turned to wood and it's seeding 😬. Our tortoise and old goat would still eat it though. I'll pull a few young enough to eat the root.
I love the young leaves in salads and cooked like spinach (actually think it has more flavour) but I've never thought about using the older, larger leaves. I'll definitely try that!

Piggie gets to go to the vet again this morning. Got him into a harness last night as the sanctuary people suggested. Wow that was something else. Piggie was handled so gently...and he screamed and screamed. So we sat on the porch together after until we could both breathe easy again.View attachment 3596886Then I was able to pick him up without a panicky struggle from him. He spent the night inside so I wouldn't have to terrorize him at 4am to have him at the vets in time for his appointment. View attachment 3596887
It seems to have done him some good though, he's actually less afraid afterwards and spent some time at the front of the crate just watching me instead of staying as far back as he can. He got a little molasses bread to help him feel better too...wow he likes that stuff 😄
Looks like a little piggy is going to be joining your zoo....😁
