What did you do with your flock today?

I worried during our chickens first storm too. I even went out and checked on them. But when I went out, they were all just fine and on their roosts. Hang in there. Stay safe and I hope you get power back soon
Looks like north of I-10 is going to get slammed pretty good. This old FL boy has had his share of riding out hurricanes so this should be a cake walk. No tornado watches out now. Just those stinking head advisories.

North of I 10? I thought we had like a 30% chance of rain. And yeah this is the worst heat wave I remember and I was born raised here

We are up in AL 30ish miles and I think we had a 50+ percent chance. For once the bet paid off. All the layers have seen this before and will either take shelter in the woods or will maybe find their senses and hunker down in their coops. The Mar, Apr, & May hatched kids are no telling what they will do. They are on their own.

Never had one here. When back home about 60 miles east of Tampa we just sat and watch the trees fall down and cleaned up the mess over the next couple of weeks. Our first was Donna. Then a 40 year lull only to get 3 bad ones over 6 weeks starting with Charley. I have pictures of Charley I'll dig up and post a few in the Random Picture thread. I know of no really damaging hurricanes that have hit this area of AL. We have only lived here with our chickens for about two years. Chickens came in mid Sept of 2022. Our plan for chickens is to load them in a big truck and go north.

Ok. Yeah - I've been in that boat with several hurricanes - but never with chickens. I was just wondering what the protocol is - says Alicia eyeing that very very warm Gulf.

I'd like to build a bunker with underground coops as we are well above the flood plain. For a few we could do just that over time. Considering our age we are probably going to down size and get a trailer equipped with mini coops big enough to travel north and back home when the coast is clear.

Power is back.

How about frozen 20 oz water bottles? I tried milk jugs with the older ones and they just ignore it and the water to walk in.
Yeah, those will work! You can also freeze them and float them in their waterers so the water stays cooler during the hottest part of the day. Takes a lot longer to melt when frozen solid in the bottle like that! Chickens are not always the smartest about the heat! :S

Yes. I've been putting the frozen ice bottles in their water. They drink it up. Today, I was trying to teach one of the babies to stand in the water to see if it would cool her off. The baby roo flew at me and landed on my head. I'm hoping he's not going to turn out to be a jerk who attacks people. They are 8 week old cream legbars and today was their first big day out.
