What did you do with your flock today?

Trying to get my geese to not be so afraid of me….peas…yeah that isn’t working. Cracked corn…sure if it’s 50 feet away from me. Corn on the cob…same. Carrots, forget it. Not really sure what else to try. It’s ok though if they never really like me. They are pretty and I love them anyway.
Too beautiful! They still remind me of ballerinas in tutus! 😍😍😍😍

Well good morning all and happy ... Wednesday😜?
So flight ended up being full, but I sat next to the most loveliest of gals. She worked for the planning department on Kauai and was on her way to Lahaina.

Arriving in Kahului I was shocked to find the remodeled airport was a major hub and resembled more of the Oahu airport than the Maui i knew a few years back. Well done, but a big change. Same with Kahului town, changed, big and busy. I did not recognize its old charm that I so loved.
Taxi to get my kid and we quickly got out of there. Back to busy airport and took an earlier flight. Only had time to get him a nice big burger, which he Wolfed down and then onto plane.... then Kauai bus for 2 hours till home.
Gave him a covid test b4 he jumped into shower and he was positive. Ugh!!! So a quick pack, then into my truck we went up Koke'e. The kid is beat in every way.
Got a few good meal in him thank goodness, lots of fluids and he is back to sleeping. He does not have symptoms yet, beside tired but....
So good to have this place to run to. So good to be up with my lovely chickens. It is cool up here and raining now. I am grateful.
Your poor son! He sorely needs some luck about now. At least he has his momma to provide some much needed TLC in the way only moms can. ❤❤❤

I agree. We have screaming kids on one side, with barking dogs, and 2 homes down more kids, mostly happy, playing noises, and another young dog which does excited barking. We are going to invite them to our cider press in October, since the trees have more apples this season. I believe I'm getting noise accustomed to crowing, as it doesn't seem to keep me awake much anymore. Last year when the one cockerel died suddenly, my neighbor said that it's awfully quiet, and he wondered what had happened.
I had the same reaction from my neighbours when Sylv died. They all wanted to know where he was and said they missed hearing him. Maybe they should have been careful what they wished for.... 😁

Mine did great today, even through the 103 degree high temperature. Their daytime run is covered with an insulated metal roof, and I soaked the woodchips on the run floor with cold water 4 times. And later in the day I tossed in a 1/2 gallon size block of ice, just for the heck of it. They pecked it, but not sure they really liked it.
I've mentioned this before but my little roo, Ferdy, loses his mind over ice! My ex-batt, Maud, was obsessed with ice chips and he soon realised tidbitting with ice was sure to get her attention (and mating privileges 😁).
Although we lost her last year, he continues to go berserk when he's given ice. None of my current girls could care less about it! Except Clara, his biological mom. She'll come over and half-heartedly take a piece. I'm convinced she feels sorry for him as he's trying so hard 🤣

What's the secret? I'm all for giving it another try as I enjoyed the fresh flavour (reminds me a bit of runner beans and asparagus peas) just not the slime.
We soak them in salt water for a little bit, wash, then saute. You cook the cactus by itself until the slime disappears, then add everything else. We add garlic, and thin slices onion and jalapeno. Toss together and lightly cook the last ingredients and seasonings and your good to go. The pickled ones are already deslimed.

I let my pullets out really early today, around 3PM. I sat in my recliner down next to the compost pile, under the cedar trees with them for a couple of hours. They really enjoyed scratching in the compost, and going into the woods and eating hazelnut tree leaves.

A little while ago I moved my chair up next to the run where there's a lot of green grass growing. They followed, and I came back inside to watch the national news and get my daily dose of bad news....

Dang, there's never any good news these days.

After a would care treatment from the chicken's nurse I put a rooster to bed in a dog crate. It looks like a predator had a near miss of getting him just before dark. I found him on his roost as I was closing down tonight. His left ear lobe is torn up really bad and it looks like he has lost a lot of blood. He refused any food and even treats they normally love to almost inhale they like them so much. He is in a safe kennel where nothing can get near him for the night. I just hope the bleeding stops soon.

Do you have some Blue Kote or Vetrycin on hand to spray on that wound?
