What did you do with your flock today?

We have been calling a rooster (young) just rooster that is in a kennel recuperating after he was nearly killed by older roosters as we didn't want to name him and then loose him. Today he looks like he is getting very strong and has been named Cogburn. He even has started snuggling with his human mama. He had all the skin and a lot of flesh taken off the back of his neck and some of his comb taken off. He would have been fried chicken but now he has a home as long as one of us lives.

That is kind of you to say. I felt kind of bad as he just came off being sick, is a awkward older teenager, just had his first 2 crows and is underweight. So, I think he does not look good at this stage but know he will grow into a beailutiful boy and is capable of the task required of him.
I've know his new dad for some years now, and know he will do good by Roodolf, plus have his word he will return if it is not a match.
I was sad for the pullets as they looked a little confused, though happy they did not "disappear". Anyone else notice that with rehoming or introing?
I wasn't being kind, he is handsome and will be glorious when he's fully grown. Just like when you can see that in a gawky 2yr old colt.

The girls moped for a few days when re-homed Leo as they all adored him (as did I😢) but seem to have the attitude "life goes on".
As far as intros go, the only one we had any kind of issue with was Maud. She wasn't allowed to sleep in the coop on her first night out of quarantine, I found her huddled under the fire pit. I brought her indoors and had a word with Sylv the next day. He personally escorted her to bed that night and she was fully integrated by morning.

Happy 🐓Aloha Sunday all!
Beautiful cooler morning. Coffee is terrific too. Don't have big plans today. Did my coop cleaning and straightening yesterday. Need to sew, need to pick up son, need to feed all babies. Feeling a little less stressed now that DH is doing better and is able to help AJ with her hearing aids and feeding of her dog. It's the little things...

I have a few late and heavy molters, so feathers are all over the yard again. I swear, I looked at Cheepie and she dropped 5 feathers on que.
1 egg in my nest box. Mountain flock gave 6 the other day... out of 30 chickens... 😖 Looking forward to floating in eggs again, someday... soon-ish 🤞View attachment 3660195
Have an awesome day all!!!
I haven't had an egg from mine since 29th September! I had to -gulp!- buy some on Saturday.
They're aĺl in heavy moult. Poor Clara has about 6 neck feathers. She looks like a mini vulture.

Yesterday I made some autumn/winter preparations.

I closed the summer ventilation opening in the coop and reinstalled the poop board. I got it out this summer because of the mites, but the mites stayed away and I don’t expect them to come back with these temps.
The poop board blocks a strong air flow under the roosts and it makes it easier to clear the poop.
+ The chickens have a little extra indoor space under the poop board now, nice in rainy and stormy weather .

My oldies stopped laying but I still have eggs from my 2-5 year olds. They are loosing some feathers but no severe moulting (yet).

Prepping for winter here too! Bedding has been changed from hemp to chopped barley straw (much warmer and more snuggly). Need to re-attach side panels to the run and seal any ceiling leaks next.

Our egg production seems to be picking up one day and down the next I can't complain about 18 eggs from 25 hens when all around me egg production has almost come to a stand still. The pen of about 16 RIR pullets are taking up the slack as the older ones are dropping 7 large eggs a day now on average. I believe in another 2 weeks they will be laying a dozen on average. They got their first taste of scratch feed yesterday ahead of this cold nippy morning. I think the warm gulf air went farther south.

We're back to the 100° range here and supposed to stay that way for the week. Nights are feeling pleasantly nippy though... down in high 60's. Think everyone here's about done molting and no hard molts except the green pea boy I got this year. He looks like the rattiest thing right now! So I upped his protein and giving him extra fresh veggies daily.

Normally my winter gardens planted and growing well by now but I'm behind this year. It's not too late though so that's probably this week's work. Once I empty the beds to replant, the critters will be stuck with mainly alfalfa for a bit. I only have a few year-round greens, but the grape vines and sweet potato vines will keep being harvestable for a while. No variety but still good veggies. Lost my watercress in that crazy summer heat...but should be cool enough to get some restarted. Minari survived the summer well and has a lot of overgrowth....so I can trim that back and share some with the pets. Summer was hard on my yard this year! 🤞 for a kind winter.

O... decorated for Halloween yesterday....thought our cactus monsters were kinda fun 😊.

Roodolf made it to his new home this morning ♡ 30 ladies of his very own to watch over.View attachment 3659753
Haha, I love the name! I'm glad that you were able to find him a good home, I think it's so great how much time and consideration you take rehoming the boys. ❤️
