What did you do with your flock today?

Today I almost lost Nugget to a falcon. My mom and I were out discussing a place to put pigeons, and Nugget, being as friendly as she is, was hanging out with us. It swooped in and just barely missed her by 2-3’. :th
She was pretty spooked, but is otherwise okay. I can’t believe it was brave enough to attempt that. Two people were standing right there! I think it tried to grab someone earlier today, but no one saw it happen, I just heard a lot of fussing. Ugh.

I love hearing about the things you are learning!! My plan when I retire is to have a couple of goats, maybe a mini cow and a LOT more chickens...so share away!! :D I won't be retiring to the snow, but weather planning is weather planning! So I will try to soak it all in!

I have to agree with @TropicalBabies that your snow looks so pretty!! I am sure that worrying about all your babies makes it far less pretty though.
We definitely started getting actual snow this evening. But in that photo...well, the only way I can think of to explain what that pile was made of is when you get those little bags of silicon beads to absorb moisture in your (for example) vitamin bottles. It was like the sky dumped tons and tons of silicon beads. Frozen silicon beads. 🤦‍♀️ But we are TRULY thankful to have those beads instead of ice covered limbs and electric lines from freezing rain. Tomorrow it will be a balmy 32F. Saturday 36F, and Sunday (drumroll.....) it will get all the way up to 45F. Wooohoooooo! 🤣

For your future goats, do research on what breed you want and why you want that. I wanted boer because of their cute floppy ears. They're also super sweet and always love getting petted. They are also very prone to disease and dying suddenly for no good reason. In April, we bought a variety of "guinea pig" goats to learn with. Our two boer died despite absolutely heroic efforts to keep them breathing. And because they were incredibly docile and as sweet as you could ever hope for, I was absolutely heartbroken when they died. Our spanish have never been sick once. So we will be going with spanish goats. That's a breed that will thrive on a diet of rocks and thorns, doesn't need worming, and doesn't even need you to provide shelter. All you have to provide them is good browsing land, water, and free-choice minerals (based on the minerals lacking wherever it is you end up living). We will be providing shelter though, no worries 😉

This happened right before your eyes??? 😵

Lovely. Just lovely. I have a relative there.
@TropicalBabies , same one as you. In Kapaa.
Wanted to ask if you have been able to visit?
I like Kapaa it's good fun. Has a nice climate and is always green, good beaches for play, just a lot of traffic. Bad traffic and they are still building w/ no solutions in sight.

Do your relatives have chickens? Lots of people in that area keep chickens.

That is crazy that all of that was beads of ice!! That must've been a sight to see! I hope that most of it has melted so you can leave the house.

Thanks for the info on goats!! I will most definitely take your comments into consideration, as I am very prone to getting what I think is cute over what is practical. :D I know nothing about Spanish goats so I will need to look into them! I have mainly been eyeing pygmy goats because no matter where we live (will stay on West Coast), it won't be enough property for larger goats...unless I get reallllly lucky! I love hearing about goats and livestock and LGDs, so share as much as you want and I will soak it all in! How are the reds doing today?
