What did you do with your flock today?

The two breeds are double coated it protects in all weather Trust me I know the breeds in and out.. Shaving them destroys the protection God gave them.
Yeah, I do feel bad for the ones I see here in Sacramento! Where it’s over 95 from June to September! 😩😩😩 I plant to retire to the Western OR mountains. Probably perfect weather for the double coats! ❤️

We got our first Easter Egger egg today. This little lady chose the coldest morning of all (9°F) to surprise us with this. Not sure which of the EEs left this, but I have a suspicion it's the white one who I call Diamond.

Alas, we have reached the end of the weekend…I sure wish they were three days long! Today I offered to adopt a chicken from someone who couldn’t care for the chicken because it has an upper respiratory that looks just like my chickies URI. The family doesn’t speak much English, so I wasn’t all that certain of what the issue was but they wanted her to go to a good home. Guess I will see if she does okay on meds and heals up well. She is in quarantine and I feel sad that she’s alone, but so far just sneezes and a bit of noisy breathing. She’s a Swedish Hedemora from Greenfire Farms and she’s so beautiful!

Also—my mauve Orpington finally laid her first egg and it is a beautiful shade of pink just as I had hoped!! 😍 Other than that excitement the weekend was pretty quiet, which I loved! Miyuki survived alllll the child attention and the old lady dogs went to the vet and got new medicine to help with all their old lady issues. :)

Hope you all had a good weekend.

Had to deal with mites and lice for the first time. Pretty thankful I caught it when I did. Major coop cleaning today and treated the birds. Though I noticed one of my bantams is missing a toenail while I was inspecting her. Looks like it's been gone for awhile. No swelling, redness and never noticed any limping. Fact she's walking just fine.

I had to do that back in August in 100 temps!! I hate all the cleaning you have to do! So much work! Glad you caught it early too! ❤️

Thanks. Normally it isn't this cold early and it's dry. But the cold hit early and more moisture than normal. So between that, my birds staying inside, and above freezing... it was a recipe for those nasty critters.

Check toe on the banty if it broke off how long have you had them ?
She has feathered feet so the toe with a missing nail was hidden. For a moment I did thought part of her toe was gone but the nail is the only thing missing. I've had her for 2 years but got her from a friend.. so the hen is about 3-4 years old. Possible that she was missing that nail when I got her. My older birds do not like to be held but been doing more physical checks lately since they've been inside more.. glad I did.
