What did you do with your flock today?

Boy it’s been a busy month! I can’t believe it’s almost over already. I haven’t had a ton of time to myself between work, kids, and animals! We’ve had some rain and cooler weather so I spent a bunch of time yesterday with the kids laying out new bedding in the runs, refilling feeders and waterers, and cleaning coops. Everyone was super happy about seeing the sun and feeling the warmth. I’ve been giving the big chickens more chances to mingle with the Polish and other babies and aside from the occasional peck they’ve left the littles alone. The littles are loving their freedom as are the Silkie mommas, so it’s been fun to just sit outside and watch them all explore.

I’m about to have babies coming out my ears too. I have some people interested in my Olandsk Dwarf chickens and my quail…so I’m hatching some babies! All of them already spoken for! I did a fertility check on the ODs with 13 eggs and all of them developed. 😳 SO, I’d say Little Dude is getting his job done! So I posted about them locally and hoped I’d maybe get a couple takers (I don’t need 13 new baby ODs!!) and people were so excited I had to start a waiting list! 😳😳 They are amazing to candle too, you can practically see it all. It’s been neat to watch the development.

I was really disappointed in the hatch rate of my shipped eggs…and found someone local-ish and decided to give one more to at getting a few d’Anvers (my hatch resulted in 2 out of 10). The lady was selling 10+, so I was banking on 12 eggs and figured I’ll maybe get two more that hatch and I’ll have 4 and be happy. Only cost $20 plus shipping, so I decided to do it. Well…when she said “10+“, she meant it! I got 18 eggs!! I don’t need 18 eggs 😆😆😆 So I may be in the chick selling business if several hatch haha. These eggs traveled about 3 hours and only took 3 days to get here, so they have a shot! USPS sure took me on a ride though. Said they were shipped from Fresno and had arrived in Sacramento and were out for delivery after two days and I was shocked at how quickly they were arriving. So I waited till normal mail delivery time and they didn’t come and I checked the tracking and it said they’d been “delivered”. But by delivered they meant an individual had come to the Center and picked them up. So this obviously confused me and I went to my eBay page to email the seller and looked again at the tracking info and noticed this time that the individual had picked them up in FRESNO at a different zip code from shipping. So now I was really confused as was the seller! How did they go back to Fresno after being out for delivery in Sac just hours earlier? It was too late to call the post office, so I went to bed. Got busy with work and didn’t think about the eggs till close to lunch and checked the tracking info on eBay again…and it still said they’d been delivered but had a bunch of new info about them transferring to West Sac, then Sac and then finally to my local PO overnight and again being out for delivery in Carmichael where I live. So I waited until normal mail time and sure enough they arrived like nothing ever happened! SO weird!! But it makes me wonder how much of an adventure these eggs actually went on and thus how many are no longer going to be viable :-/ So I guess 8 extra eggs ups my odds! 😆 I don’t think the USPS person knew how to enter info into their computer database 😆

Anywho, my bantam buff Brahma eggs were due to hatch today and out of the 6 I got…3 never developed and 2 DIS after lockdown. I have one that internally popped yesterday and hadn’t externally pipped so I made a safety hole tonight. It’s my last chance for a buff Brahma so I wanna give it the best chance! It was cheeping loudly at me but there were still some blood vessels visible so she’s not quite ready. So I’m hoping by morning I will have one sweet baby Brahma! My little Cochin-Brahma chick is 6 weeks old and has the Brahma build and comb. Looks like a black Brahma to my untrained eye. You’d never guess his (definitely a boy) Daddy was a Cochin.

I have a serama chick that hatched a few days ago. She needs special attention. CJ, which is her name, has one toe that did not develop a bone. So CJ can't really walk. In addition she refuses to eat and drink on her own. We've been dropper feeding her with great success. Though im hoping soon she's able to do it on her own.

Aloha gang!
Been super busy with 1 more week till the kids get here. Lots going on and our place is really starting to look fabulous. (Thank you spring!)

Flock has been great. Had a few with sniffles after the rain but they went away with supportive care. Buff Roo is 95% and feeling frisky. 2 month olds are great though Cody got out of AJs compound and was able to get to one but just minor injuries thank goodness. So, everybody back in the roo cages- no more bugs.

Grandkids eggs hatched on Saturday. Some real beauties ♡ only 12 out of 15 viable.
