What did you do with your flock today?

Hi! New to this thread, just found it. I didn’t do a lot with my flock today, just everyday chicken stuff. I did do some stuff yesterday though. I had a hen go broody on Monday, so yesterday I got a dog crate all ready for her. Put in some shavings, feed, water, etc. I moved her into it and she was sitting on 13 eggs! She is a FBCM, so I let her keep all of the eggs and figured I’d see how she does. She went broody back in April and had 8 eggs under her and out of those 8 hatched out 6 of them. I’m amazed she went broody again so soon! Not complaining though, I love having baby chicks around😁

Welcome to the thread @LabMomma !
That sounds like a fun day ♡ . What do you do with your chicks? Are you able to keep them? Sell? Give? Etc! 😳lol
That's a lot of eggs and I hope we get to follow along.

Also curious 🤔... what will she be hatching? 😄

I may keep some of the hens and will probably sell the roosters and any hens that I don’t keep😁

My rooster is a Black Australorp and my hens are black Australorp, French Black Copper Maran, Welbar(welsummer x barred rock), Blue Sapphire Gem, Olive Egger, and then another hen of mine is some kind of mix I’m not sure what of. So the chicks will be purebred black Australorp and Black Australorp mixed with those breeds of hens

Sounds gorgeous ♡ you have a few of my future fantasy flock team. The BSG & CM. ♡

I have an 4+yo Ameraucana who would not jump off the roost this morning. After a few months of a heavy lay (unusual for a 4 yo mediocre layer) she stopped pretty suddenly last month. 2 weeks ago I found a soft shelled egg that I suspected was hers and 2 days later she set herself apart from the flock.

I gave her calcium, warm soak, vent check and then antibiotics, then repeated a few times and she seemed back on track but I suspected ascites and this morning she is pretty full. I'll do the partial drain to keep her comfortable and give her a few more days with her pals. ☹ She will be missed.

Other than that Princess Peaches has finally gotten back to heroldself after a hard molt and a flock demotion. Good to see my funny friend again. She and Share happen to be buddies and it just solidifies further in my mind how complex and beautiful these creatures are. She asked me for m. worms this morning so I checked my bins and gave what I could.

Did not take long till I was surrounded by my lovelies.
1/2 emptied a compost tumbler yesterday and had the girls pick through it, bagged it then emptied the other half.

Rotated the second tumbler and saw dozens of sergeant fly larvae. Good. Free snacks.
Flock has been exceptional. Spider is getting his legs treated and conditioned and Peaches needs me to treat that fungus on her comb but all are well as a whole today. 🌴👈 touch wood.

Took my first load of items up Koke'e and will load my truck this eve for #2. Chickens will be load 3 or 4. Mid to end of month. Need to do some prepping on the coops etc.

Love your flock! So sorry about your Ameraucana😞

This is our tractor took one section each side of the roof. Added hardware cloth around it, Banty go in there. Cats do prowl them cannot get at them.
I oughta buuild something like this 'cause I like to have the little ones out in nature as early as possible. But since I do not buy chicks often, it would be another thing I will have to spend money on, use it for a few weeks then store it for a few years 'til I buy some more chicks. Maybe get rained on or broken somehow then I would feel I needed to build another one.

No kidding! The storing of the big stuff is the worst around here too. We are not blessed with space- let alone extra covered storage space.
I love @PJ's big brooder tractor and may one day copy it if I have the room. I myself have the mini model that stores under my house or on my animal work bench, it can still be a pain but I go though phases where it is used a lot- till chicks are 2 months old and it helps with the intro/incorporating of littles, broodies, the sick or wounded, plus I made it with scrap lumber. Only the 1/2 hardware cloth that I replaced the original chicken wire with was purchased specifically for it years later.
For me- a must have item and worth the troubles.

The weather has been really bad the last week or so, so today my chickens came inside and took a nap on a towel.
Afterwards the weather cleared up a bit, and then they took a nap on my lap.
