What did you do with your flock today?

It looks like Cher and Sonny have a case of fowl pox. So far it doesn’t look serious, but I put neo on them and will be keeping an eye on them and the other two babies.
I think I had it a year or two ago, which explains why no one else has it. Sonny, Cher, and the babies were the only new additions since then.

My main concern is accidentally spreading it to the pigeons. Idk if the pigeons can catch it, but I don’t see why they couldn’t. I’ll be doing as much as I can to prevent spreading it to them, but they’re only separated from the rest of the flock by some hardwire cloth, so I don’t know how much that’ll do. :/

This was their first time getting any sort of medical treatment (aside from being dusted), and poor Cheri was disgusted and betrayed by me. She expected love, not goo. XD
Sonny, on the other hand, didn’t even flinch. She layed down and took a nap while I put the neo on. She normally doesn’t like her comb to be touched, but she honestly seemed relieved. Her comb is huge and sometimes gets dry, so after seeing how well she did with the neo, I might add putting some some sort Vaseline on it as part of my somewhat-regular routine.

Aside from that, I’ve had electrolytes in a few water buckets for them since it’s so hot, but I’ll be making sure to keep those out there now that they have FP. I’m not sure what else to do in the meantime.
I actually found straight iodine on a qtip on the pox does a really good job of drying them out to speed things along. You might try! Poor Sonny and Cher 😢

Well, my heart is heavy and my stomach is turned upside down. I am so sad and heartbroken. My dog, the only one to really like me, killed ALL my ducks and my 3 week baby chickens. We cleaned up everything we could, and took the dog to the pound. 😭😭 I loved that dog but the moment I seen what she did to my little helpless babies, I knew she had to go. She has tried to get to my older chickens a few times and has been running off more. I just can’t keep a pet that is willing to do what she did to them. It was horrific and terrible. We made it with the older 18 chickens without any problems. The 3 week old chickens did ok obviously until the ducks. This husky spared nothing and just destroyed the babies like they were nothing. After her getting a taste of them we also knew our animals outside were no longer safe. I hated to have to get rid of her but I couldn’t look at her or touch her after that. I would never be able to look at her the same.

I don’t know how to deal with this. It would have been horrible if a raccoon did something like this but to have a beloved pet do this, is killing me.

I’m so sorry, I can’t imagine the heartache :-( My dog has now killed three of my adult quail, two day old quail, and two of my 4 week old bantam chicks, but fortunately (I guess) it is clear he was trying to play with them and accidentally killed them. 😢😢 Even knowing that he didn’t necessarily mean to kill them I had a hard time looking at him for a few days 😞 It’s so hard loving one animal that naturally wants to eat another animal you love :-( So very sad for you and your losses :hugs

Thank you. It’s in her blood to just want to eat them. And she did. Took heads off and it was just awful. I can’t believe how much damage she did. My kids seen what she did when we walked through the door. They seen her with one of the ducks in her mouth. This was just too much for everything

I haven’t really felt like talking about chickens the past few days :-( My sweet little d’Uccle Lily that had the really crazy worm load I didn’t catch in time I guess that triggered the worming for all the chickens (that may have killed Axel) died just before we got home from our road trip. And my favorite little Silkie Cher that Aria used for showmanship died the next day. :-( Why is it always the sweet and gentle birds that die? Cher never really fit in and had a tough time trying to be a chicken, but she was just the sweetest little moppet.

I’m just feeling really sad and haven’t really found much joy in chickening this past month or so.

That is so so sad. I wish I knew what to say to make everything better.

I’m sorry for your losses! That is hard! Hugs! :hugs:hit:hit

I’m sorry for your losses! That is hard!
Thanks. It’s been a bit traumatic for both me and my daughter…we are both afraid to go out and see them for fear we will find another of our favorites dead :-( It’s never the annoying roosters or least friendly birds! Always the favorites that just want snuggles and attention 😢😢

Gosh @kurby22 ...you and your feathered family have just had such a rough time lately 😢. I always enjoy your pictures so much...your birds always look healthy, happy and well cared for. And your kids happy face as she cuddles a bird is just so sweet ❤️. What you've been going through lately is a bad year...it's rainy season in most places and unfortunately that brings mosquito's...who often also bring sickness of all kinds. I've been there too and feel for you and your daughter who must be sad too.
Huge hugs. I really think you're a good chicken momma and all this loss will pass.
:hugs
