What did you do with your flock today?

Gorgeous flowers! I’m so sorry I have done this several times when I go out with my chickens this past month. All the favorites that came to sit with me are gone and it just makes me so very sad and I start crying again. I miss Puff too and I rehomed him :-( They just get your heart and when they are lost tragically it’s just so much harder, hugs.
Thank you! That would kill me too! I hope that you will have more come start to come sit with you. I wish I could give you a hug! :hugs. None of my family really gets it. I mean aside from my husband and kids. It’s just they are going through it too.

We have been missing 2 chickens and one of the smaller ducklings. We were so hoping to hear them chirping or talking after we got the dog out of the area. It so sucks cause every morning I would wake up hearing them talking to each other and I woke up the next morning and heard chirping. I looked around and realized it was just a wild bird. The kids got up and heard it too and I had to break the news to them. We believe that the dog ate the babies we couldn’t find. There is more to the reason than I want to get to.

This is extremely hard. I’m glad my kids are going through this now as sad as it is. Especially since we are getting into this and there will be more casualties.

I hope you find what happened to your little ones and you can stop it next time. :hugs:hugs

Happy Sunday all.
Got a text from my hubby that he got launched from Cisco AGAIN last eve. So I headed down earlier than planned and took DH to ER to get some x-rays. Nothing broke this time thank goodness.
Doing chores and good clean of the coop. Nice being with my other flock. I miss them and my @ home set up.
Let the boys out to stretch and eat green and as I watched it dawned on me that this cockerel is Bolts boy.View attachment 3223285View attachment 3223286Same everything, just a blonde version.
So, is this the silver lining after losing a loved bird? This one can not replace Bolt but I sure recognize his spirit and my world is a better place because of it. Now.... how to keep him...? Gulp.
No word from the gal coming to pick up a roo. She would be a good mom but that would mean I'd have to part with a price of Bolt.... View attachment 3223300Egg collection is waaay fun down here.
After my walk yesterday, I worked all day sewing handles and attaching to bags. I think I got 10 done and I am very happy with them.View attachment 3223311View attachment 3223312
I have another pile of feed bags waiting for me up the mountain lol.
Your boy looks beautiful!! I’m glad your DH is ok! I love your bags! I kept mine for the brooder to make easy clean up. But this isn’t a bad idea. But I make dolls and my kids Halloween costumes. Which, since there is 6 of them, I need almost all year to get them together 🤣

I have a lady coming to buy some birds and I'm having an awful time picking birds to give up. This is my first year breeding the dwarfs and I'll be selling birds before I've really gotten to know them.

I should have waited til at least next year to sell any dwarfs though I think. By then I'd be sure who I want to keep. I've gotten in the habit of not handling baby birds much unless I'm giving them to a friend who wants sweet birds. For the chicks I breed for me, I wait til I've picked the birds that go, then I start handling the rest and see which of the ones I like also like me. The ones that don't are the ones I give away when someone calls asking for pretty birds (if they're calling they're a friend of a friend). It's been my system forever. That way I rarely get attached to a bird I can't keep, it lets my kids get first chance to fall in love with any they're going to (though they've outgrown that for the most part), and the ones I keep are special and the ones I don't keep are just birds that might end up special to someone else.

This time the whole flock is pretty new to me and I'm not completely certain which I feel are keepers.

Think I have them sorted...just wishing I'd waited and done my usual give away extra birds when I feel like it for these guys this year.

On the good side, the lady getting them is experienced and likeable.

Wish she'd wanted ducks instead...I ended up with an awful lot of extras trying to get one snowy girl with the color depth I want.

We put the daylily by the duck house. It may seem silly to some but to me it’s gonna help me. This daylily is like a memorial for the 12 ducks we lost. I’m going to add more to it and make that corner a little garden for them. I know that their will be more casualties due to disease or illness or predators or just about anything. But this was different. I’m sure there will be eye rolls or more harsh things to be said but I will grieve how I need to.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me and understanding and caring. You guys are awesome!
I think it is a great idea. One of my favorite chicken people has a graveyard (of sorts) for her lost loves. A wonderful garden setting where she has statues etc.
I planted Song of India ontop of my lost babies and think of them when I water, take a cutting or just sit and enjoy. I've had some hard losses too but I cry less now, I enjoy as much as I can and give them the best chicken life I can.

We learn a lot through BYC, time and hard lessons. Some of the big wins help balance it all out ♡

Thank you, virtual hugs are nice too! ❤️ I had a sweet girl who would make Dino noises every morning and when she died the coop felt so quiet in the mornings :-( that was of course before my baby boys grew up to be noisy crowers! Now it’s never quiet in the coops 😆

Poor Fluff has dry pox now…I swear when it rains it pours! On the bright side, I isolated him cuz he was acting like he didn’t feel well and so I may have caught it before it spread to the run. The scabs showed up yesterday and he’s been in the chicken ICU for a couple days now. He’s nowhere near the rest so fingers crossed he’s the only one to get it 🤞🏻

Also went to the store for a misting fan that sits atop a Lowes bucket so the quail get some relief from the heat. I can’t use misters the same way for them because it would rot the wood and make a soggy mess in their cages, so I am trying a fan mist that helps cool the air near them instead. I hope it helps, they are hard to keep cool without a lot of extra trips outside. Also bought frozen veggies and watermelon and filled a waterer with electrolytes to help them out. I am so grateful to be working at home on these horrible hot days so I can keep an eye on them all.

I’m trying hard to move forward and enjoy the babies I still have…so I brought in some teens that needed some love and attention today (plus some time in the AC didn’t hurt either!).

Also, I got my first fairy egg and it’s even smaller than I imagined they would be when I learned about them. So itty bitty! 😍

Also, I read up on the submission for a necropsy and I missed the window :-( Apparently they don’t want them if they’re older than 3 days and tomorrow would be day 4 so they wouldn’t get till day 5. I didn’t realize that it mattered that much as long as you didn’t freeze them. :-( Blah. Anyway, night all, sleep well.

Your daylily is lovely and that's a lovely way to grieve. :hugs

Absolutely! I don’t know where I would be with out all of your support.

I’m glad that I’m not the only one to do this. I just really felt it was appropriate. Now I just need to plant a few more to make it look better. I just said something to my husband and he got up and said let’s go. And we put it in. Love that man.

I hope he recovers from it and you don’t have any of the others end up with it!

I have one that likes to make noises like that too. All the time she is making noises like a Dino. And she is the one that like to bite the back of my legs when I’m not paying attention. She always gets me. My rooster likes to crow whenever I go outside and they see me. I haven’t figured out if he likes me yet or not or if he is warning me. 😂 or maybe telling the girls I’m out. They ALL run to the run door when I come out cause they think I have treats. And most of the time I do. 😂

You have some beautiful girls!!!
