What did you do with your flock today?

I’m trying very hard not to get my hopes up, since this “thing” has not ended well with any of them. 😢 He’s such a good boy! Loves to snuggle and makes such happy sounds when he gets food.

We got a ton more rain this afternoon and everything is super soggy again. Blah! The worst part of winter is the slop! I am certain you have to deal with worse! Snow slop is definitely worse…the pretty snow doesn’t last nearly long enough!

Yes, I do believe if looks could kill, JoJo may have taken me down with that face! 😆😆

I’m glad you think he looks well too! Sometimes I wonder if I’m imagining his healthy glow because I want him to be better! He has been able to move himself where he wants to go, just wouldn’t call it walking! But I’ll take it! ❤️

I’m not sure if JoJo is going to make it—he’s very quiet and pale. I gave him vitamins and he’s nice and dry…but he makes no noise and sleeps. I’m hoping with the vitamins and the rest he will bounce back. 😢

Yeah I’m super excited about the quail coop, they deserve more space! I decided to make the walls half plywood, 1/2 hardware cloth, and the entire front will be well-framed large doors with cloth centers. They need the summer ventilation! Roof is going to be a leanto with gray pvc plastic to allow some light thru but not too much. Working on my drawings :)

Haha, my kids and husband did not find it as cool or fun at all 😆 The clean coop does make me happy though! They needed it!

I am testing out my colors on the new roost bar addition I want to add to the coop. So this one got Gypsy Teal…it’s really a pretty color!

Thanks! I am doing my best to work patiently and do what I can when I can. Right now I can sit on my memory foam cushion hand sanding cheapie furring strip boards to make coop doors and trim. Cheap wood for a reason! Then I’m painting all the studs and exposed to the ground wood Flexseal white. I do them a bunch at a time for a couple hours and it seems to limit the pain to my back!
Glad you found work you can do that doesn't hurt too much. I know how frustrating and stressful just resting can be...even if it's needed for self care.

I absolutely love that gypsy teal! That's a rich color!

Fingers crossed for both JoJo and NoHope. Hopefully JoJo just needs a little more time to bounce back and NoHope is on the upswing.

Can't wait to see how the quail area comes out!
I really, really hope he makes it too. I wonder if he has something underlying going on? Hopefully he just needs the vitamins and a good rest. 🤞

That teal is beautiful. I'm biased though as I had a piano stool painted that colour paired with a very pale olive trim and a William Morris style needlepoint I made for the seat ❤️

It's great when you can find useful activities that don't hurt your back. I'm having a slower day today, after spending most of the day in the kitchen on New Year's day then all day yesterday mucking out the two coops, disinfecting and riddling the sand I put down, then tidying the back garden, shampooing the grass and sawing up the branches I cut back just before Christmas. Oh, and belatedly planting hundreds of spring bulbs. Don't know why I actually bothered with that as it's really too late to put them in and Pru and Gladys went round last year pulling up any tulip they came across and flinging them round the garden.
My back wasn't great last night but I couldn't get out of bed this morning as it had gone into total spasm. It's eased off a bit now but a definite message to take it a bit easier.
Hope your feeling a little better!
This weather is insane!
First rains
Then blizzard
Then tornadoes and flooding
Guess only thing we won't have is volcano!
No wonder all of em are sneezing!

@TropicalBabies that spider plant is amazing!!!
@kurby22 I feel for you n all the soggy mess. Hope JoJo gets better! So much illness. I wouldn't know what to do!
Hate to see sneezing...it always makes me worry. What a year weather wise! Are they looking and acting ok beside the sneezes?

Kind of like a soft pineapple x lychee.
They are less sweet than the pineapple and don't taste as sugary and the texture is soft and pliable that is firm enough to section off usually with a big black seed in it that spits out easily. I would not know how to cut it, it is more of a cut a section off and hold and eat and pop out seeds as you go.

I am so impressed with all of you mushroom hunters. I have thought of buying plugs and plugging a log or 2 up Koke'e but never learning and harvesting from the forest. Mr son is a bit of a mushroom head too but just a little, he is mostly busy with being a young man. So, i'm intrigued. Your big beautiful showy shrooms are too beautiful to not get a heartfelt reaction. It is like a whole world into itself🤩 amazing!
We've tried plugging logs with very poor results here...just too hot and dry. We even went and bought some fresh cut wood for it. But I think they'd grow well in your area.
I've had a teeny bit of luck with conk mushrooms. I harvest some of them to use for wood burning, and rest them outside in wooden planters to let them dry and drop their spores first. One planter now has them growing around the base. They were growing on the inside lip also but I accidentally destroyed those while refreshing the soil for plants.
I don't actually know a lot about mushrooms though...I just soak up some of my daughters knowledge while she's sharing her pleasure in it all.

Tomorrow I have a fellow coming to pick up a pair of oegb spangles and I'm going to incubate some eggs from them as well for him. He's bringing me a pair of his oegb Isabelle in exchange for my pair and will buy the chicks when they're ready. So today I'll refresh their nest boxes. I usually breed just enough of them to keep them around for my pleasure, but the two times I've offered a pair for sale got so many responses...I might hatch a few more this year.

On the 16th the one lady that drives six hours is coming again. I have two hens I don't want that she's going to buy and I have a young cockerel mix I don't want i'm going to give her. A friend of hers also has an ayam cemani hen she'll bring down to trade for a couple more hens. So today I have to pick out two more hens I'm willing to part with. Manny will be happy to have a new lady for his little flock. I'm not sure I want to actually breed them...but I'd like to see how well/poor they lay for myself while I decide if I want to keep them long term.

I also got a pair of porcelain d'uccles back from a friend. I got two shipments of them this spring that I didn't order or want so gave them out to friends. One had a roo that wasn't getting on well with the other roos so I took him and one lady back. Not sure what I want to do with them or the cemani...or the Isabelle for that matter.

I need to thin my yokos also but they're another breed I hate thinning. Worthless birds really...but I can sit and watch them for hours. Too many at the moment though and they're sleeping area is getting cramped. ☹️ So hoping to get started on that unhappy chore. I'll put the thins up for sale...never offered them for sale before and I am curious how they'll do.

Could be straining to lay an overly large egg and burst a small blood vessel, as you said. If there's not much and it's bright red it's likely not desperately serious. Check for signs of prolapse though. Is she a young bird just started laying?

Soursop sherbet is fabulous!

:celebrateUpdate. She was perfectly fine this morning. Redness abated. Perhaps it was from the soak. Two lovely presents awaited me. A cute 46gm egg and perfect poop. Put her back out with the others this morning and she seems just fine. Now it has me wondering if she had gotten a cock toenail scratch near or in her vent when they would battle over her. I had seen E come at R feet first. which then bled, became a clot, and then expelled onto her feathers. Thanks for all your advice, everyone. @Gammas Bearded Babies

@ChicksnMore they are all acting normal except for the 3 porcelain d'uccles...they stopped laying after the blizzard! They laid every day through the blizzard then stopped! Only thing I can tell that's different is the 8 week old babies were using the nest boxes to keep warm and the d'uccles got mad?! Gabby (the only d'uccle thats always got an attitude and keeps her distance unless there's a treat involved) chases the babies all around pecking em.
Then my oldest boy Joey is getting more aggressive towards my legs n not just my feet...it was so bad yesterday that I kicked him...didn't stop him at all. Then this morning I knocked him upside the head..stunned him n I got worried I hurt him but then a few seconds later he got up and came at me again.
He's not like this when I'm holding him...I really don't get it! So frustrating!!!
But I'm black and blue and cut up all up and down my legs and hands and arms cause of him!

I plugged 7 logs the spring before the unbearable summer of 2021. I think the heat killed them, as no sign of shitakes at all.

I've had to reread the rooster behavior article a few times. My cock is getting more cocky with me, and so I turn and make my finger movent like I'm going to peck his head. Time will tell if he gets to stay. Haven't handled him at all, to correct mistake I made with my first cock. Article says that if we coddle, cuddle, etc. this tells them that they are equal in status to us, and will fight us for the dominant position, hence the constant attacking for fear of us mating their ladies and spreading our genes. Feet means fight to them. Is yours a teenager, like mine are? Joey may have to go to crock pot or freezer camp. Not good to re-home with bad behavior. I personally would find it difficult to cull any bird, nor am I any expert at this. Hope you find a good solution.
