What did you do with your flock today?

I sat out in the run and gave the girls snacks. They received
Red cabbage leaves, Grits and strawberry tops.
I also did chicken obedience training with my King Shepard. This command is a tough one for her.
Today was another good day.

Our flock went from 97 to six yesterday, thanks two stray dogs.

They were in a run with a 5' tall door and 6' tall fence.

Two lessons learned:
Fit stray Alaskan Malamutes can jump at least 5', or climb a 6' fence - maybe both. Not these two though - anymore.

Lastly, appreciate what you have - always, because Murphy is there - waiting.

This is not a pity story, its informational. It happens. Start over. I should not of had all my chickens in one basket.

So today, I'm grateful for the 6 remaining birds. Today we'll start to rebuild and add a new 6' door to that access point (as if its enough). 😉
That is so aweful and I am sorry! We have some huskys in the neighborhood that went after our mini silky goats recently and fortunately we were right there to stop them from getting to them. I don’t know what I’d do in your shoes. I wish you much better luck with your additions.

I’ve been sprucing up my sweet babies’ spaces! Currently on a painting project to make our backyard look less like a tangled up zoo... my husband and I just finished turning a spare room in our barn into a brooder room 😅🐣🐓

Looks like a good dog to keep pretty girl there
Looks are deceiving. Trust me, she would kill those chickens in a split second. I've been working with her but, if don't keep her advanced obedience training on a top par, those chickens would be dead.
Her stay down position took a lot of control for her to do.
After two minutes, I went to her, praised her as we walked out of the run on a lead to play. That was an incredible feat. Now, I'm stepping it up after one more week of increased time in a down stay position just like that in the run. Ill keep ya'll posted if you like.

My chickens have not figured out that the puppy is not a chick. Or maybe it’s the opposite!

Aww, one of my dogs was like that. He would hang out with the birds a lot, and they didn’t seem to mind him that much. Now that he’s old and mostly blind he’s really scared of them. And a couple of my birds will attack the dogs.

I'm really enjoying this thread!

I got laid off yesterday. I work in a conveyor belt factory, and it's not the first time I've had this happen. I'm not freaking out over it, I'm taking advantage of the time off!

It's so wonderful to have time to watch chicken TV! What is it about watching chickens that is so relaxing? I know I'm not the only one to experience a calming and relaxing feeling just by watching my birds. I like to offer treats such as scratch grains or dried meal worms to draw them closer to me. I have a few who are willing to take treats from my hands. Watching them interact with each other fascinates me. Their body language, vocalizations and posturing all say so much. Truly, they are very interesting!

I don't know when I will be returning to work. It could be weeks, it could be months. But I am taking full advantage of it. My son and I are almost ready to begin construction of a chicken tractor. I'm raising peeps and teenagers and have a small flock of adult hens. I have more coming in July (thanks to all you ENABLERS!) so there is plenty going on here!
