What did you do with your flock today?

Sorry about your loss @penny1960. How hot did it get and how are your other girls doing? Is this heatwave expected to continue or end soon? :(

I just can't do the heat and humidity of summer anymore. Had it, too old, too smart. We don't have fancy A/C's so I can really make everyone miserable if we lose our trades.🌴🤪

I finally made my start up at Koke'e today.
This is the dry fit- and it did no problem.

Packing up and getting ready to go

DH and I laid out the run, pounded in most of the T posts needed -except where I need to level and did not bring a shovel or pick or hoe... or any garden tool for that matter, oops- We assembled the pre cut roof frame, screwed in the roofing tin we got for free, raised and installed entrance and roof. Then pau for the day. The summer country palace.
So far the price tag is about $200.- $250. max. including $100 for 100ft roll of 2x4 wire. Tomorrow I will level on the road side of run, install last 6 post and then we can install the fencing material. I will add some more siding by ripping some roofing tin length wise. Installing will be a little time consuming but I think it will work and even look a little cute when finished. Everything else I will harvest in one way or the other... being in a forest and all.

Probably a few more days to finish. Also have to take apart the mini coop, scrub and bring up, so a little juggling as I have some littles in it now and it is THE favorite nest boxes. Def be setup by this weekend forsure. I think the chooks will be thrilled and I can't wait to see their faces- happy- not heat stressed.

k. Gotta make dinner.

Oh, that is horrible. How hot did it get for you guys? Must have been a oven in that coop. Again, I am so sorry for your loss @penny1960
Thank you bummed but had them will get more coop is too quiet. We have air conditioning in the house .. I am old school I guess birds stay in coop not the house

Ya know, after all this time... I thought this thread was "What Did You Do FOR Your Flock Today?" Cuz I really have a list of that... but have not really done anything WITH my flock in a little while :lau

Yesterday, what I did for my flock was to level out the fence line and install T posts. We ran into something hard where we were going to set a second wood post for the recycled gate entrance... after posthole digger was not making headway, DH threw a few good whacks at it... nice pick yes?

Then he dug around while I made lunch and made a plan...

After a little thought I decided to turn the gate on a bias, pound in a T-post instead as it will just be for the latch and extend the run 3 feet up to the shack. I'll put my mini coop there so the shack can serve as wind protection.
Then we proceeded to run the fence.

I hate to say this in front of @penny1960 but it was actually cool up there and if I did not stay busy I'd almost want a light jacket. Chooks are gunna love it. Well, just that little bit took up much of our working time. Just 1 more trip and then I can pack up the chooks, cats, dog and hubby and make it up in time for the forth and miss all of the craziness that happens in my hood. My hands and back were sore this morning and I am happy to hang with the ferrets at home today. They are going to love it up there too!!!
I am going to actually make the back fence as a break away so if there is ever a fire up there (touch wood) I will be able to load the gang, hook up the trailer and get them to safety with a few snips fairly quick. I'm liking that plan as the planet is getting HOT and I am always worried about the spread of fire on that THICK tropical forest floor.

Our activity must have scared away the deer or pig that has been munching all of my lily buds cuz I finally got to see one this year.

K. Tomorrow... I will bring up the mini coop (I think), rip the roofing mat for the sides and install, install the last of the fence, install the gate and boom- done and ready for the chooks!
