Thanks. I've lost several birds to hawks.. it's no fun. I find that my chickens are very smart and most of them know to stay under over. Either plants, cool, or my porches. The ones that get picked off are those who wonder.

Lost one of my Serama hens today.. just a pile of white feathers. Hawk must have got her

We live on 36 acres and our chickens free range during the day, so we've had our fair share of losses to coyotes, but it's never easy.

Aloha gang! Happy belated Valentines day. I'm sure you were all smothered with kindness by your sweethearts. ♡♡♡
I had a busy day, dog cornered a feral tomcat first thing in the am. Pretty sure he did not come out the winner I am hoping that there was a lesson in there for him.
Had to go to town and do errands. Came home and let the chooks out and put things away and LB cockerel hoped AJs fence where her dog was able to yank some feathers out and scare the poor guy. That was a close one so this is the second time in under 1 month. Time to come up with a solution to the fence hoppers. Can only get so lucky so many times.

Love the shuffling @GG. My favorite part or def one of my favorite parts of chicken keeping. Loved that the boxes got new interest ♡♡♡ chickens! I always like to add a new box or freshen up old boxes when I get new layers. Poor baby's. Old hens are so bossy.

Morning it is wet here, not sure where I left my brain.
I have 5 pullet in the banty coop ..
What was I thinking ?

Had a moment of stress this morning. Went out to release the pterodactyls while DH fed the dogs/sheep/goats. These are adjacent pens.

DH calls to me.... "Um....are you missing a chicken? There's a whole pile of feathers here. Feathers everywhere!".

Me: "Uh....i sont think so. What color are the feathers?"

DH: "White."

I had counted all of them.before shutting the the coop doors last evening...as always. But suddenly started wondering if one had somehow gotten out.

Counted them all.

Counted them again.

Looked to make sure the two naughty EE ladies who keep hopping the fence were there. Yep...they were there.

So, all I can figure is that Poppy got an owl or other bird in the night. That dog can catch cardinals in mid air. So I wouldnt be surprised if an owl got taken while swooping down for a tasty frog or other critter.

Sad for the owl (or whatever the bird was), but better them than my chickens.

Just before all of this happened, DH had seen and pointed out to me a possum in the field. Neither of us can figure out how that thing managed to evade Poppy. But it did. So I'm going to be even more stressed about my birds every night. Finn had been sleeping inside for the past several nights because he injured his shoulder and needed a few nights of R&R. He's back out with her now though, so I doubt anything will get past the two of them together.

Never a dull moment.
