What did you do with your flock today?

Most people recommended candling pigeon eggs on day 5-7, but curiosity got the better of me and I candled them today, even though it’s only day 4.
And we have life!! I saw noticeable veins on both eggs. :celebrate

Even if they don’t hatch, this has been really exciting so far. The last time I tried hatching anything was back in 2018 (and the eggs were too dark to see what was going on) and the time before that was in 2010 or 11. I don’t remember much of that one. XD

Currently we are working on making the fence taller since the chickens can’t free range during the late spring and summer months because of all the commotion that goes on due to the approaching harvest season, can’t have anyone getting run over by a combine or tractor. We have a few ladies that can jump over the fence so we’re adding another 2 feet to make it 6.5 feet tall so hopefully that will keep those rebels in

Oh yay!! How fun! I can’t wait to see baby pigeons if they hatch! 😍

Well, got 17 eggs in the incubator yesterday so chicks will be a little over a week when the grandkids are here. AJ's yard trimmed, weed whacked and mowed, over 25 bags of composted horse poop bagged and sold, assisted son with his front struts and shocks and AJ is requiring more time and care. So my chickens feel a little neglected to me. I'm doing their basics but need to do a deep clean out of their storage and organize along with add trellis and work on my garden area. Must be spring!! Weather has been terrific with high clouds, good trades and some origraphic showers here and there.
Well, better get after it.

Hows the eggs and flock @pennyJo1960 ?♡

My crew is good Thank you.
Poor frizzle she is still molting. Looks like heck.
Poor baby ♡♡
I forgot to mention my henPrincess Peaches got stabbed by Spiders spur. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️
Been spying it for the last month thinking I gotta trim it... Welp, duh, yep. Gunna happen now. Think P. Peaches needs a spa retreat ♡ putting it on my list ♡

Wow was just saying on Shads thread I started with chickens and roosters when I was 3.
I had this forked stick snakes and roosters.. More for snakes .. Her roosters where not worried about me ..
We had two coops each rooster had his girls ...
Maybe that is why I do not have other birds now ..
See them from you all.

Hehe they do look like the mini Groots 😁

Sounds like you have been keeping busy! I am fearing we won’t get a spring here this year…we are going to go almost straight from winter to summer :-( It’s supposed to be 90 on Thursday 😩😩😩 All the things you all are doing I’m usually doing before it gets too hot. And ugh…it’s already too hot!

The nice thing I guess, is that the days are warm enough now that most of the chicks can go outside. The Ameraucanas and Polish are plenty feathered…so I vaccinated them all a few days back and opened up the coop where Betty and Fuzzy have been raising their two babies I gave them. Before I opened their door, I brought all the babies outside and put them in the open air portion of the coop and then let out Betty and Fuzzy. Everyone seemed very happy! Betty and Fuzzy dust bathed for a good half hour haha.

The babies got a few pecks by the momma hens but mainly everyone enjoyed the freedom and outside foraging fun.

I opted to bring the d’Uccles inside though. They’re heads are still completely fluff no feathers and they’re very small and I worry they might get crushed. So I sat and watched them all get ready for bed and watched Fuzzy peck at the Ameraucanas quite a bit so I decided that I might bring those two inside as well but I’d wait a bit longer to see how everyone settled in. I went back out to check on them and could by find them! They weren’t in the upstairs coop nor were they downstairs! I looked and looked…and finally found them. It’s a terrible and blurry pic because it was dark out, but Betty was sitting with her wings fully out and covering both the Ameraucanas and the Polish were squished under Fuzzy 😆 So I decided they were gonna be okay outside.

The rest of the Polish and the little Cochin boy are is a cuddle puddle at the bottom of the ramp—instead of inside the cat crate I put out for them. They were too scared to try going up I guess! Not sure why they chose to sleep in the doorway but I just think they’re all so precious! Now to name them! 🥰

Aside from the baby fun, I checked on Honey to make sure she’s doing alright with her new friends. She’s a really funny bird. It’s tough to figure out what she’s thinking whereas the other chickens I can read their body language and know pretty much what they’re up to. Despite being partially blind, Honey flew up into my lap and climbed onto my shoulder and then flew up onto the top of the coop! I had to help her get down though. She also doesn’t really know where to go so I have to move her to the coop after the sun starts setting. I think it’s really hard for her to see so she just hunkers down and chills. I have also found her eggs just laying in the run under the coops…so we have some work to do for her to find where things are. I think I’m going to get a big white and red feeder because she seems to see the white and red better than other colors. Thinking maybe the contrast of the shades? She found the waterer really easily but can’t find the food. Even after I stuck her beak in it. Poor sweet girl could take find the scratch either. She’s just a lovely bird though, I am so happy to have her!

I also candled my eBay lesson eggs today and set the bantam buff Brahmas. The bantam EE eggs are growing very well and 7/10 eggs is developing nicely! The d’Anver eggs are 3 days behind the EEs and 4/8 are looking really good. Tonight I found one with a blood ring sadly, BUT! Another one that I had decided to keep in even though I was pretty sure I wasn’t seeing development—JUST in case—actually had the start of a developing eye tonight! I had moved it last night from the outside circle to the inside ring in hopes the heat would be more consistent and help. Not sure it will make it, but I’m thinking that there may some cooler temps in the outer ring of eggs. So moving them around every time I candle seems worthwhile. This is one that’s further along…the picture of the maybe egg doesn’t show anything 😆

Anywho! I need to get some sleep! Hope y’all had a great weekend!
