What did you do with your flock today?

Good afternoon! I just came in from sorting out this year's babies into tentative keepers and for sure going birds. One of my neighbors is coming this evening to pick through them and take some home, then Monday I'll be taking some to another friend who wants a few more hens. Its always so hard to decide which to keep! Whatever's left in my "to go" pen I'll put up for sale this year. I've always preferred to give away my unwanted birds, but this year I think I have more then I can give away🫣🙃

The baby sparrow's are almost ready to fledge. They've finally developed a healthy fear response so today I get to set up their weaning cage.View attachment 3136542
I have a Canary I'll put in with them. They'll be able to watch her and learn how to eat and she won't be scared by my reaching in to feed them. She's a good teacher because she eats such a wide variety of food too. Hopefully they'll learn to be flexible eaters so they have a better chance when they're released.

O my gosh those tolbunts are adorable!
Thank you for spamming us! So many cute babies!❤️
Thanks @ChicksnMore! 😍 I just love my chickies!

Those sweet baby sparrows are so lucky to have you!! So precious!

Someday I want a peacock or two! Are they friendly when hand raised? Or are they more for lawn decoration? 😁😁

This is brilliant. Never would have thunk it but makes perfect sense... awesome.

@PJ. flock looks great. Nice job, nice treats.

@kurby. You always amaze me with your flock. Your Millie Fleurs is making my heart skip a few beats :love

And here I thought you were going to tell.me you were sending your millie fleur on a Hawaii vacation. 🌺😉

MIL is doing better than expected. Made it to rehab and has not been thrown out (yet). Thank goodness and thank you for asking! ♡♡♡ she is actually able to walk with assistance a few feet. She will transition to a care home, not back SIL's. For the best as they have a team of people and nutritionist, equipment etc, etc.

It is a beautiful Sunday here and thank you for the good vibe well wishes

Ugh, phone is going a little bonkers.

Anywho, wow! A peacock! And baby sparrows. Congratulations and glad you are able to bask in the sweetness of it all. I love those moments.

I have feral chicks that got beat and abandoned by their mom. It is a common occurrence for me to have to step in, often at the request from a good chicken mom. This is from a few days ago. I wa able to pick up all 4 by hand.

Also trapped 3 teens to take down to the pasture. No basking for me. ♡♡♡

They can be friendly! The first two I raised are the perfect friendliness... they're interested in and approach people and will eat treats from your hand but aren't obnoxiously friendly. I got talked out of them by a friend who lets them free range on her property. The boy has stayed and never wanders off in 3 years now even though he has no lady...the girl flew away. ☹️ Those two were more typical of hand raised peacocks.

I have one girl right now that hunches down in front of me like she thinks I'm a male... she'll eat from our hands buts shy and nervous. She doesn't like strangers at all.

Then I have one boy that my kids would carry around and luv to death. He's so in your face that he's a bit much. He sometimes tries to land on your head or shoulders...he tries to eat your fingers, toes and clothes...and he cries when we walk away and leave him. But he'll also follow you around like a puppy dog...just don't stand still too long around him!

They're fun birds to have around though. Definate eye candy! And if you like doing crafts...the eggs are fun to play with. This is a pea egg that I used a wood burner on trying to do a cave painting look.

Ive never tried eating pea eggs but they'd probably make a mean omelette!

Oh wow! That egg art is super cool! How fun!

Your peacocks sound fun!! That makes me happy to hear! When I worked at the zoo, I had to train birds and the emus were sort of scary and I wondered if peacocks were more chicken like or more emu like 😆😆 I was super fascinated by the emus, but anything that has a beak that big and powerful right at face height…is a little bit scary 😂 Puff was in a mood today and but me in the chin pretty hard…so anything worse than that seems not ideal 🤪

Emus!
The only time I've been close to an emu, it was making sounds straight outta Jurassic Park! Nuff said...lol.
