What did you do with your flock today?

So I can’t remember anymore what I’ve said where…so sorry if I already said this…but I am losing another one of my Polish chickens and thinking I may have discovered the issue. I was looking over Axel and under his wing felt all crusty. So I lifted up the wing and looked closer at the crusty stuff—I was sure it was dried poo or something but after shining a light on it, discovered it was some kind of skin scabbing/crusting. I can’t be certain without a culture I’m sure…but after some time on Google looking at gross chicken illness pictures I am thinking it might be gangrenous dermatitis? 🤷🏼‍♀️ After reading about it and looking at numerous pictures it sure seems to fit their symptoms well. I just can’t figure out why they’re the only ones dying from it or showing any symptoms?? Axel is now unable to walk but his legs move fine, but still eating and drinking and I’ve been giving him antibiotics and washing the scabs and dousing them in iodine…I’m not sure if I’m too late and too much internal damage has been done or not, but I’m sure trying. He lays on a towel that I bunch up so he can sit upright and he has food and water within reach. I just keep hoping that with a good week or two of antibiotics and continuing to eat and drink he might turn a corner and start being able to stand again. He lost a bit of weight but seems to be maintaining enough food to go potty still, although it’s got a green color to it which I know is a bad sign.

I’m also currently nursing Honey, my partially blind EE in an ICU brooder as well. I thought at first she had been beat up, as both eyes were red and crusty and closed and she wasn’t really moving much, but now I’m thinking it might be a chicken cold instead. So she’s also getting meds 2-3X a day, some terramycin and VetRx. I swear I get a good solid two months of healthy and fine and then one month I get hit with all the things alllll at once! By the end of July, I’ll be down 14 chickens either from rehoming or death :-(

On the bright side, I’m going to make some good money tomorrow selling my OD grow outs and my buff Brahma boy Ruby and weirdo Ferdinand…and there will be more room for all the babies to be happy. My small coop that’s for d’Anvers got a roost bar addition today too—so they will enjoy that I think! I think the eggs that were developing thanks to the chickens hiding them from the chicken sitter are due to hatch this Friday/Saturday but looked like maybe only one of the two eggs made it to hatch. It’s always tough to tell in those dark brown eggs! But I didn’t toss either egg in the trash this time, JUST IN CASE! 🥺 I just hope it’s not another frizzle. I think frizzles are beautiful but their feathers are so fragile and break so easily! Ms Frizzle looks like a horrific victim of domestic violence right now. I am only happy that she is probably much cooler without all the feathers.

So we will be doing a huge reorganization this week and everyone is getting moved around to make things better for everyone! Nohope is getting to be huge so he and Roxy are getting kicked out of the Banty coop and moved in to the big white grown up coop! Along with Amy and Emily the Ameraucanas. They’re all much bigger and need more space! I hope it goes okay 😟 All my chickens are pretty easy going with each other, but it’s still something new and stressful and I hate creating stress! Fingers crossed 🤞🏻

Oh my gosh @kurby22 !!! You do keep getting hit with everything! Hopefully your polish will be able to kick this and No more get it!
And your poor EE!
One sick baby is more than enough but 2 not to mention all the losses!
I hope things start getting better soon!!!

Thanks @Gammas Bearded Babies ❤️ I agree...it's a lot and it's exhausting to keep up with! Between the heat, the water, the illnesses, the chicken drama, and the deaths...plus my kids are home until noon every day and I am trying to work...I am SO done with July! And now I am unsure I will be able to sell Ruby today...I just heard him sneeze :he

@kurby22

I'm so sorry your having such a rough patch. :hugs

I've never heard of gangerous dermatitis. I hope it's not contagious...to other birds or to humans. And bird flu...your whole flock needs a big hug right now. It's hard to protect them from mother nature. Try not to let it all get you too down k? I had one year where I kept losing birds too...I had mareks and pox run through all my flocks and I went nuts trying to figure out how to protect and save them. It eventually ran its course and I've never had a repeat year like that. Thankfully. Hopefully your loses are almost done and once it's over, you can rebuild your flock. Huge hugs! :hugs:hugs:hugs

Yeah, closing your flock sounds like a very excellent idea at this point. Have you had them tested for mareks yet?
Any chance you can take a sick one to the vets since you show and sell your babies?

Happy Aloha Tuesday all.
Well, drama, drama, drama.

As the Flock Turns, Beetlejuice is mating a few of the pullets. Think we are close, close, close to POL. Screaming, clucking, plump red combs

Yesterday got up to 91° w/ 51%. We have a big beautiful fun swell and the winds were up so it did not seem as awful as other days, kind of fun and exciting hearing the crashing surf the last few days. I turned the well water sprinklers on to cool us off. Thank goodness for free water and electric.

Yeah, I really don't believe it's anything like Marek's, or I would expect other birds to also have issues but none have had even remotely similar signs of it. And there are a lot of young chicks around the Polish and none are sick at all. The GD is a simple Staph infection that is alleviated by antibiotics and iodine in the water, but if it's not caught quick enough it can cause damage that isn't repairable apparently.

I think the rest of the birds are just stressed out to the max thanks to all the hot weather, but yes...I'm no longer selling birds that have been incorporated into the flock. Only the ones that have been in segregation and vaccinated. So Ruby is now likely going to stay or be sold with full upfront honesty. He has been vaccinated, so a sneeze or two doesn't worry me but I told the buyer to hold off until Thursday or Friday so I can see if he is really sick or just a bit of sneezes. She is aware of my concerns, so I am doing my best. But yes, the birds I want to sell are all kept elsewhere and vaccinated. Thus the FIVE coops and the giant dog kennel--plus the brooders I keep inside, haha. The ODs I sell are all raised inside and in the dog kennel as hatched babies, and the d'Anvers are also separated for 4-H project purposes. We practice biosecurity as much as possible and vaccinate. So far everyone has been very healthy...with the exception of the Polish and Honey! Honey is a curious case, because of her eye issues and blindness. I am not sure what she's dealing with but she has been segregated and no others are sick.

The losses lately--with the exception of the Polish--have all been crop issues, shipped eggs, hatched babies a day or few days old, dog casualties, or trash can chicks. When I took my other birds in to the vet and they were sick they tested negative for Mareks...and since it's not transmissible thru the egg and the Polish were hatched eggs here...I think Marek's is unlikely. I've certainly spent plenty at the avian vet since November!!

Blah, anyway...thanks for listening to me vent. I may take one of the last remaining Polish in to the vet for a check up to see if I can avoid losing the other two though. They also now have iodine water. I am hopeful the worst is over...I'm really not sure without a lot of testing and a necropsy we will know what is up with the Polish. I started them on Vitamin E and Vitamin B Complex today too since the symptoms are similar to a Vitamin deficiency too...Axel hasn't gotten any worse...and his droppings today weren't green! Woohoo! That means he is eating enough to improve things, because three days ago it was mainly green and liquidy. He moves around a lot, his legs work he just won't stand on them. And the scabs are going away...so the iodine washes seem to be helping. Fingers crossed!!

I got the recently hatched babies on field trip to big run where there is a large brooder so they can visit with the big babies all safely!
Didn't get a pic cuz it is literally sweltering outside!
I'll try to grab one when I bring em back inside.
They are 2 weeks old today!
Had little one on one with baby cochins. They fell right asleep as I sang to em!
