What did you do with your flock today?

Pea eggs from my neighbor are hatching. Here's the first baby almost out...View attachment 3243528
Her birds throw a wide variety. Her eggs hatch out to be silver pied, pied, black shoulder, India blue or white. All those colors from one cock and two hens...pretty amazing 😍
Absolutely amazing♡♡!!!!

Well today was a fun one. Went into town this morning to meet up with our old neighbor to go for a walk. Both my kids and two dogs joined us. It was a great way to start the day though it meant I missed out on my garden time this morning.
Took my youngest out to eat while my oldest went off to work, spent a long time yakking with my brother on the phone, processed zucchini, cooked dinner with my youngest and now I'm taking a break before I go separate out some birds to run to a friend's house tomorrow. Giving her two pea babies and a couple of ducks.

We found a baby rattlesnake in the courtyard earlier so going to boot up and use bright lights. Usually one baby snake means there's a lot more. I'm getting awfully good at getting those rattlesnakes...but the babies are kinda terrifyingly mean little buggers! I couldn't believe how many times it tried to strike me...it didn't even try to run. So boots and good lights. Fingers crossed all my dogs and cats know to leave snakes alone as well as I think they do.🤞
Sounds like a perfect day ♡ except for those pesky snakes. Yikes!! 😬 and double yikes!! 😬😬 I wish you luck at rooting out the ill tempered and unwelcome visitors. Suddenly makes having rats seem very minor lol. I'm not much if a snake person but yeah, I'd be there.

Yeah…I have to agree with you. I don’t mind snakes. I’m not scared of them either, however I have to agree that a mouse infestation isn’t anything compared to snake. Those little buggers snapping at me. Yep I would be bitten.

I'm so used to the snakes now. When we first moved here we had a horse and a dog get bit in the nose...but both survived. Once we had one in a coop and my youngest had gone out to collect the eggs. She decided to try to scare off the rattler by throwing stones at it and we lost a few birds from it. But my baby didn't get bit, so it was ok. And I changed how I keep my chickens to try to make sure there's no where to hide in a coop.
On the funny side...I learned to get good at killing snakes because my silly hubby used to try to shoot them. When he gave up on that, he switched to trying an axe. I saw him heading for the garage in his shorts and flip flops and I ran for the shovel. It was dead by the time he got there with his axe. He even thanked me. Even a long handled axe is pretty short and I just didn't want him to get bit! 🤣
Just sat with everyone today a couple times and gave out lots of luv and cuddles and a few grapes.
That sounds like a perfect way to relax and recuperate. How are you feeling today?

Well I didn't get to run the birds to my friend. We had a pig show up as a stray last thanksgiving and this lady kindly took it off my hands. She lets it have the run of her whole property and this morning it tore open one of her runs to eat the high protein peacock food. So she's decided it's time to pen the piggy. She's going to get the supplies and I'll go over and help her build it, so the birdies will wait til then to go to their new home. If she does her usual, she'll fix a big meal and we'll have a fun time while we're at it.

I went outside in the late afternoon and found that sometime over the day one of our Chinaberry trees had toppled in the garden. I got it chopped up and moved off my poor garden. So no treats or playtime for any of my birdies today.

Hope everyone's day was good!

Had a good day finished up deep cleaning ( took me 3 days) my deep litter before fall. Added another bag of fresh it smells so good in there. We re-homed our oops rooster and 2 layers to some friends just starting their chicken adventure. There's more peace here with Henry gone. Also refilled all waterers including my closed loop system before cold hits here. Was a good day.
